I've had white tire covers to protect the tires from the sun. Now I'm looking to replace them, and thinking black, but the question arises... do they heat up, protect less, discolor...etc. thoughts?

I like white altho there is probably nothing wrong with black.
Wear a white T shirt on a hot day and then wear a black/dark shirt, which is cooler?
Good Luck

I use black. I agree that it may absorb heat but it's not like it's in an enclosed space. The whole back is open so I can't see how it would affect the tire. The cover is primarily for for UV protection. Besides, the white ones show way more dirt than the black. Once less thing to clean.

How would you like to try to keep white tires clean?
I doubt that the color makes much difference in this application. White may last longer however.

I often wake up in the middle of the night in a cold sweat wondering if my tires are clean.

Makes no difference. The increase in temperature is nothing compared to the heat generated while driving and the measured surface temperature between black tires without covers and with black covers is near nothing.

I have used black for about 5 yrs. Wash them & apply a coat of 303 after use so they're ready for next time. I chose black for "color coordination" (black tire covers, sunscreens, bra, tow bar cover). Also I don't like the way some white ones discolor.
