Anyone having a unit with hyd. over electric brakes using them with a Ford OEM brake box? I have heard various issues with "some" combinations of the Ford controller & certain disc brake systems.
I have an '06 with the integrated box & looking at a newer fiver, one of which has disc brakes.

My 06 Kountry Aire has electric over hydraulic disc brakes. They work great, however my 08 F-450 has the larger disc brakes so I don't use the trailer brakes very often.

Issues with built-in brake controllers are not limited just to Ford. The GM built-in brake controller in the 07s and 08s also might or might not work with electric over hydraulic. Apparently it is dependent on the current draw. There's a way of tricking them using a pair of standard brake coils, but a safer way is to install an after-market brake controller such as the Tekonsha P3, which does work with electric over hydraulic.

With electric drum brakes, my manual recommends adjustment after every 2500 Miles. To me, that alone justifies the option for disks.

if you are ordering a 5er I would recommend the disc brakes, on our first trip out we came upon some road work, right lane closed, I was already in the left lane traveling about 55 mph when traffic came to a dead halt, had to stop very quickly, (we have a 350 with integrated brake controller) hit the pedal hard didn't think we would stop in time, the 5er disc brakes engaged after about a second delay, both DW and I were pitched forward when the 5er brakes grabbed we stopped about 8 feet behind the car in front of us, the car behind us went in to the grass in the median, the car behind them had to swerve to the right into the closed lane, so it would seem a 10,000 lb truck pulling a 17,000 lb 5er with disc brakes can stop faster then a car. very nice when coming down a mountain also

Yes on the elec/hyd disc brakes. I did a self install on my 2003 28BH Cruiser. I had lost a brake due to meltdown on a trip last fall. I did not want to replace it with 50 plus year old technology. I used Kodiak calipers/rotors and a Brakerite actuator. Outstanding performance. Also used my existing Prodigy controler. No problems after 3 trips. If anyone is interested I have pictures of the install. Cost was between $1000 and $1100. I would do it again in a heartbeat. Easy install too.

Up till the 09 model years Ford, Chevy and Dodge are all using the Tekonsha Voyager brake control in a stripped down mode as supplied by John Roba and Assoc. Starting with the 2009 model years they are all going to the P3 model. The Voyagers were touch and go as to actually working with elec over hyd brakes. The safest approach was to disable the factory brake control and install a P3.

Have a 2003 Newmar Mountain Aire with tandem dual Dexter axles, 8 tires on the ground. With older models of the Carlyle actuator, like mine, the models of brake controllers are limited. With the newer actuators, any brake controller will work fine. Tekonsha shared info with ford when ford first used the built in controller. Then in 2008 ford changed some of their specs and NO actuator will work with them. I use the Dexter Predator 11 on both my Dodge Cummins trucks. The electric/hydraulic actuators really work great with a very slight delay when applying. Remember that electric current moves more slowly than the speed of light and it takes a moment for the current to reach the actuator located on the trailer from the brake controller located in the truck. Regardless, they are terrific. You will love them, no doubt.

Millertime sent these to me, just helping him share his install pics with everyone.

You'll smile everytime you hit a downgrade sign with a "6%", "7%", or whatever added to it!
