Mine changed when I lost my cat.,maybe a piece of your broke off inside. Sometimes they over heat and crumble inside. If your cat is gone, it'll smell like the old city bus exhaust, or an old tractor.

Maybe it is just like when we went from leaded to unleaded and added a cat to the exhaust, the smell changed. If your truck runs the same don’t sweat it. As for changing out the injectors I have never seen a whole set go out at one time. It sounds to me like the dealer is finding a different way to bring his profits up.

Try a different brand of fuel. There are differences between fuels, and if you buy regularly from one station, they might have switched suppliers. Several of the stations in one area may have the same supplier, so switch more than once if needed. The people at the station might know the supplier, or maybe just the name of the trucking company that delivers the fuel to them.

All men over age 50 should get an annual PSA blood test. Mine had a low reading, but the yearly jump was significant. The biopsy showed cancer just entering the aggressive stage. Dr. Hackenslash removed it.

Have the injector balance rates checked. They should be within +or-4 in park and +or-6 in drive or reverse whit the engine fully warmed up. Although injector problems are considered rare on the LLY motors...it was a very common issue on the LB7 motors.

Being an '06, he should have the LBZ motor. I don't think its would be injectors in this late a year model. That was maining the 01 and 02 and some 03s. When I had my DMAX, ULSD did smell different than LSD.

Yes it is a late '06 LBZ.
These are all good suggestions. As it is my first diesel, I am trying to learn what makes it tick.
I will report back after service, which is due soon.
Thanks,
Glen

Smell is gone...
I mentioned that service was due -- actually the"fuel filter life" had worked its way down to 0% and the "replace fuel filter" message came on each time I started up. This happened a couple weeks ago about the time the exhaust stared to smell. Co-incidence? I guess not. The Chev garage said my fuel filter was very dirty.
So I guess that was it. i will be more diligent next time.

I think some of you guys are spending to much time 'sniffing' the exhaust.

I have an LBZ and noticed the smell changes depending on where I buy the fuel at. When i buy at the C* it smells like it always did, but if I buy it at the off brand place which is a few cents a gallon cheaper, it has a rank (Rotting) smell mixed in with the normal diesel smell.
