I have driven truck most of my life, after enough truckstop experiences I quit the highway and started driving dumptruck. You do not want to know some of the things and people I have seen. The drivers on the road learn which ones to stop at depending on what they are looking for. Unless there is a dedicated area for RV's with good security leave the truckstops to drivers that have no other choice but truckstops. When it is 2am and there is no place to park and 5 spaces are filled with RV's someone is not a happy camper.

The vast majority of truckers will not care if you are there, as long as you are not blocking anything. But it only takes the occasional wiseguy to make your feathers feel ruffled.

I intentionally park as far away from the truckers as I can and mind my own business. Why then, do I awake at 3 am to find myself boxed in on both sides by 2 rigs racing their diesels when there are at least 20 other empty spots?

Another word to the wise: leave yourself an escape. I always park so that I can pull out easily, keeping the toad in mind. Last fall I had some guy knock on my door at 6 am because he had parked his pickup/camping trailer behind me at some point during the night, only to have some trucker pull in right behind him, and of course the truckers was nowhere to be seen.

Hi, just a note about one experience we had at an overnight stay at a truck stop in WI.
A man approached in the early am as i was opening the door to take our dog out and he waved & yelled at me to come with him - that a trucker had just won the lottery and was celebrating by giving out $50 dollar bills to anyone who stopped by his truck. he grabbed my arm and started pulling me along to an area behind the gas station/store.
I may be from a small town, but even i figured out something was wrong so I pulled away and got back in the rv fast. chuck

Flying J truck stops are great but some are small and fill up early. I have stayed in most on the I 81 corridor between Binghamton N.Y. and Nashville and the R.V. areas are well lighted and we feel a sense of security. I stay in them 4 or 5 times a summer and haven't ever had a problem in 14 years. Good food, pleasant service and clean showers if you need one.

Kraazy3 - I've always wondered about the showers at Flying J. What are the rules for using the showers? Are RVers eligible? What is the cost? Thank you.

The main thing here is to ask the people inside the store where you can park and they can give you a good idea where. I've done that and this way your will be in good shape

I am reading the answers here and it seems there are a lot of people afraid of truck stops. Stupid questions but what are the rules for carrying firearms?

I'm sorry, but how unprepared does one have to be to sleep in a truck stop. Ya I get the I'm soo tired thing and need to sleep - PLAN to only drive a certain number of miles.

Those places are the WORST place to stop and sleep. Besides the seedy people, hookers, drug deals...then you have the CONSTANT, diesel brake sound or the air brakes releasing, horns, doors slamming, people yipping and yapping. My goodness are those places Bad.

Hey here's a thought how about sleeping near the tarmac at a local airport, or there is always the train station, and my most favorite place to sleep would be on the bombing range.

Plan ahead, spend the money, and sleep sound in a campground.

Unless there is a separate area for RV'S do not take a space in a truck stop. The lot may be half full at 5:00 PM, but spaces fill up later. Believe me, there are many more trucks then places to park, especially around large cities. Under the old rules I had the option of finding a quiet place and sleeping 4 hours and spending less time in truck stops. Now that the government has helped to protect you the 4 hour nap is counted on duty-you can not even log off if you stop for lunch. When you log off duty it has to be 10 hours. These changes made it harder to find a space. Ask the next truck driver if they would use a truck stop if they had a choice.
