First time driving to Mexico...If we have valid passports do we still need to acquire a FMT or tourist card?

You may as well get them at the Checkpoint and pay the Small Fee!Of course if all you plan to do is drive to is go to Puerto Penasco or San Philipe for a Day or 2 , then They are Not Necessary!

The FMT can be issued for up to 180 days, so ask for the maximum. Tell 'em you're going to several cities deep in the interior and that you'll need several months. The cost is the same and you don't have to turn it inn unless you have your car listed on yours. Be sure to turn in the car permit when you leave the country. The cost is about 200 pesos for 3 days or 180. You might decide to come back if you have a good time.
