We have bought some good $5 a bundle wood before. One place/ barn near Gettyburg (RT116)sells a small wheelbarrow load for $5.
x2 it's a scam plain and simple. We bring it anyway and play dumb, really what are they going to do? Tell us to drive out of the area and dump the wood or we can't camp there? Lol. No prob, I'll go somewhere else.
So far here in the midwest we have seen fire wood for sale in peoples yards in Mich Iwoa and Wis, we are going to MO for the weekend and it will be interesting to see if it has started there yet.
Ah, well, having to cut and split some 10 to 12 cords of wood per year for our woodstove, I'll certainly give a contrary view. It is VERY hard work that involves not just securing and splitting the "good" firewood, but also disposing legally of the slash. (In my experience, a single load of "good" firewood implies two or three loads of slash.) And with today's prices for fuel, the job is not getting any easier!
Pay what it costs, because it's tough work and expensive.

Maybe if you'd take a look at the dead forests across the west, you'd reconsider. I think it's unconscionable to bring firewood into restricted areas.

Well having 90 acres and a shed full of wood, i totally understand what you are saying about the hard work (which even makes it WORSE in my book, having to pay for something we spent the fall doing).... however, I'm not exactly sure the person doing the work here is the one getting paid...
I'm good to take the junk and even pay for it, but I just dont want to have to pay a premium for every single little thing just to camp.
Even if they would do a buy one get one free once in a while might be a nice gesture on the part of the SP's...

Lynn,
I do understand your concern also...but what are they doing about it? Other than put one more thing back on consumers?? If we can put a man on the moon, they can surely find a way to control these pests....Heaven knows they've messed with every other concern. From what I am seeing, the "dont bring firewood" spray is not working..
When it comes to the price for firewood in CG's they put the oil companies to shame for what they charge. $5 for a bundle that burns so fast you can't cook a good steak. With 40 acres of woods we take firewood when we can but won't take the chance on transporting bugs in areas where it is prohibited or bring any back with us.
On our trip to Alaska we stayed in Alberta Provincal(sp) CG where you got all the free firewood you wanted. The only catch you had to pay a $9 permit fee to burn it. Got my $9 worth of firewood.

So if say Oregon is worried about Maryland wood, and Maryland is worried about Virginia wood, and Virginia is worried about California wood, and Cali is worried about Maine wood, and Maine is worried about Florida, etc..... than where are these bugs and pests coming from? See where I'm going with this?
My questions is this. Is the AshBorer or whatever they happen to be worried about at the time(because each year it seems like something else) going to survive the fire? Or are they worried about it stopping munching the piece I brought in just to jump on another tree in the handfull of hours before it's lit on fire?
Let me clarify my point a little more. For example here in MD campground "A" doesn't allow outside firewood, but campground "B" which is a couple minutes down the road does allow you to.
It's all across the country and a scattering of CG's within each of those states that does or does not allow outside wood. It makes you a little suspicous in where say CG "A" is getting there super special wood from.
Backing up and looking at it in a broad overview like that and it certainly does raise questions. At least in my opinion. Maybe someone can shed some real light on the subject.
To get around the no firewood because of insect policy....I use kiln dried wood, such as construction scrap or scraps from home projects. I check with the builder and get permission to raid their dumpsters. Most of the pieces I get are already cut to size.
