Our little 6 month old yorkie mix has just been diagnosed with Legg-Perthes disease. She will need a femoral head neck excision. Has anyone else had a dog with this disease? Did you have this surgery done and was the outcome good for your pet? Thanks so much for any input anyone might have. I am just worried sick about my little dog.

An uncommon disease, but I've seen a few cases, one in the last few months in a year old terrier. What surgery is planned? The most common is an FHO (femoral head ostectomy) where the ball part of the hip joint is removed. This procedure is pretty common and many dogs and cats are often less painful pretty quickly (within days to weeks).
This references the FHO detailed after dislocation of the hip.

An update on our little dog. She just had her xrays repeated this week and the results were not good. Her little leg looks much worse. The Vet says she will need to have surgery. She is holding her leg up most of the time now. He says if we do not perform the surgery pretty soon she will probably remain laim. She is scheduled for a FHO surgery. The doctor will not be sure until after the surgery if she has Perthes disease. He says he thinks he may be seeing a fracture. In any case the surgery is the same. I understand most pets have good outcomes from this surgery. I just hate to think that my precious baby has to go through all that. She is scheduled for this coming Monday. Please keep her in your prayers. I want to thank everyone who has responded. I will let you all know next week how she is doing.

My sister's Cairn Terrier had this surgery about a year ago at the age of 6 months or so. It only slowed her down for about a week. She recovered completely and is a total terrier terrorist! The only side effect is that the fur on her hip grew back a slightly different color and texture from the rest of her fur.
I wouldn't worry too much, I'm sure your pup will do fine. I think it's actually easier on them when they're youngsters.

Wow. Just saw the mention of Legg-Perthes. Humans get this, too. Usually children.
This strikes a very personal chord for me -- so I will send good thoughts to your little yorkie.
Sorry you have this worry.
