My college dorm overlooked a low-clearance underpass in Boston; How entertaining at breakfast to see one of those old-fashioned garbage trucks with its round top peeled back. Even professional truck drivers occasionally will not read the signs carefully.

No, not perfect, just don't suffer from temporary lapse of reason, my explanation for the accident. I would be real interested in what your explanation is for trying to drive a pick up camper under an 8 ft. high bridge?
The attitude on this fourum that crashing into stuff is part of the rving experience is pretty ridiculous.

According to the article, he has owned this truck camper for quite a few years. You'd think he'd be aware.
OTOH, maybe he had a "distraction" in the truck with him. LOL!
Either way, He must be feeling really bad. He has my sympathy.

Agreed I do think 10 foot is about as low of one I have ever seen one marked.

I knew a "professional" driver who was told not to take a particular route because of a low underpass. He took it three times and hit the underpass each time. IMHO, he is nothing but a steering wheel holder. I started driving over the road in 1970, and have seen just about everything. Also during that time, I have seen some of the best do some really stupid things.

Talking about being aware. I wonder how many of you traveled south on I15 just north of Salt Lake City when the freeway was under construction. In one section the southbound side was diverted to the northbound lane and there was 2 way traffic on the one side. I was going south, made the detour transition and saw a temporary sign with a flashing yellow light "Caution 11' Clearance Ahead". I am at 12'7", so I start looking for a place to stop, but there isn't one, and I look ahead and see an 18 wheeler a 1/4 mile in front of me. Knowing most of them are at 13', I see what he is going to do. He goes under it without any problems.
2 Weeks later I am up there on business and see the low clearance sign as I am going southbound, and then I see what the sign was meant for - the construction pillars on the closed side that were at 11'.

I wonder if the same thing happened to this 'un...

With apologies to CW McCall,

But the chickens was stacked to thirteen-nine."
