Greetings,
The wife & I just retired and are fulltiming.
Looking for a very reasonable campground close to WDW for late Oct. or Nov. 2008. For about a week.
Fort Wilderness is very nice but at $5o.oo/day for full hock-ups, is breaking our budget.
I realize that if we are off property we must travel to the parks, then pay for parking.
just looking for some suggestions.
Thanks,

Believe that Fort Wilderness at $50.00 per day is your best value. As noted above, other campgrounds near WDW cost just about as much and do not offer the extra-magic hours or the free transportation. Recommend you research the extra-magic hours and the Disney transportation system and the routes for/to each of the 4 parks that make-up WDW. If you do drive to a park, the parking, per some on this forum, is free. Have no experience with free parking when staying on Disney property because we found the Disney transportation system to be most satisfactory.
I think the daily parking rate is $12. That means that the local campground price would have to be less than $38 to cover the cost of fuel to WDW.
Check out the KOA in Davenport, FL listed in Trailer Life under Lake Buena Vista but physically located in Davenport. Right on the x-way about 20 minutes from WDW.

I agree. We were just there in March and stayed at the All-Star Music. We had a car and used it exclusively for the first 4 days. Switched to the free Disney transportation and used that for the last 4 days, and found we preferred the free bus transportation. Much more convienent and less hassles. And FREE! I wish I never paid for the rental car, it was a waste of money, and gas. We visited Ft. Wilderness twice to eat at the Trails End Cafe cause the kids loved it so much. We rode the buses all around the CG looking at the different loops and such, and walked about the beach...it's beautiful. We are considering a stay there in Nov. 2009. So worth it to stay in a Disney Resort, the extra amenities make the price worthwhile.
Depending on what you need there are many alternatives to FW or the KOA (which is almost as expensive as FW). If you do not need the kiddie entertainment and resort amenities there are many choices here (my stick and brick is in Davenport). Try Theme World right next door to KOA. If you are a Passport America member use their listings to find a place. Lake Wales,Haines City are within easy driving distance as is Davenport.Do a Google search for campgrounds + Central Florida should get you a lot of choices.State parks should have space available if you stay away from the coasts and tourist areas (try Lake Louisa). Hope some of this helps - safe travels.

You might want to check out Seasons in the Sun RV Resort in Titusville, due east of WDW. There, you also have access to the Space Center and beaches. It's Passport America, but I'm sure they have weekly rates, too.
