I got a letter from the bank where we keep a safe deposite box. They will give me a 10% discount if I let them automatically take the box fee out of our checking/savings account. IF we choose not to then it will cost us an extra $10 for a processing fee. We no longer keep a checking/savings account with them because of their practices.
I think I will buy a fire proof safe, and bring that stuff home.

Heres something that I didn't know. When you sign up for an automatic withdrawal payment to a company, you cannot resend it. The only person who can cancel is is the company who receives the payment. The only way to stop the auto pay is to close your bank account and open a new one.
I had a terrible time canceling the auto pay to an insurance company.

I think the discount is a great idea and cannot understand your objections. In fact, I use automatic payments for fixed monthly expenses whenever possible (but not variable items that I might want to challenge, like utilities and credit cards).
I don't even see an objection to them charging a fee to customers who refuse to use the more expeditious automatic payment, since that's just to cover their processing costs for snail-mailed payments. No free lunch!

Think about what is in that safe deposit box
If it is important papers. Insurance policies, The Deed to the Ranch, that kind of thing.. The Fire Safe is a good idea. along with certified copies at your lawyer's office and at least one other place (Miles apart)
My mother used to back up her office computer
Every day.. Stored in her desk drawer
Every week, Company vault
Every month The data "Vault" at her house some 30 miles away
Worked well. Any disaster big enough to wipe out all 3 backups.. Nobody would care any more.
Nothin adds excitment like something that is none of your business

I bolded what I think are his objections. He no longer has a checking or savings account with them due to their business practices, but maintained the safe deposit box. Now they want to charge him an extra $10 fee for not having the box fee deducted from his account (which he no longer has).
I have a fairly large fire safe in my basement vault. And I also have copies of the important stuff at various relatives homes as well.

You would if they had cost you $600+ because of bogus internet charges they refused to stop payment on when pointed out to them.
This had been a problem for a couple months. We only kept the safe deposite box there after closing the checking, because it is hard to find a safe deposite box in this town, especially if you don't have an account with the bank. Our credit union doesn't have them here.
I have a couple payments that come directly from our account at the credit union. It is easier that way. It is just this bank in particular. I don't think I should have to pay them another processing fee. I'm honestly surprised they don't have a coin box on the front door to get out of the bank once you are in.

I truely believe I have more than paid for that lunch with this bank.
We had been with this bank for over 20 years, and they USED to be a good bank. Then they went national.
Like the idea of giving copies to someone else to hold.
