The Autoformer works as described. It is very useful in sites with low voltage.

To make the air conditioner easier to get started, the Supco SPP6E hard start booster works well. This item either replaces the present motor starting capacitor, or if there isn't already one, is installed to be the motor start cap.

The hard start booster is not a replacement for the Autoformer. They work together well. Using both will allow you to run an air conditioner in some sites where other folks can't run theirs.

All men over age 50 should get an annual PSA blood test. Mine had a low reading, but the yearly jump was significant. The biopsy showed cancer just entering the aggressive stage. Dr. Hackenslash removed it.

RE Hughes V/S Franks

I've read a lot of posts on these two and frankly... I'm not sure which is better

I will summerize

Hughes comes in two sizes 30 and 50. They contain no user serviceable parts and in fact opening the case voids warranty Hughes is a BOOST only, if the voltage goes too low it will BOOST it somewhat.

Franks. comes in 3 sizes called 30 70 and 100 amp, The 30 is just that, the 70 is in fact a pair of 35 amp in one box with 50 amp plugs and outlets, this is often marketed as the "50 amp" version, the 100 is a true 50 amp,, NOTE that they may be called 30 50 and 50 in the store.

Some folks have complained that the 35 amp size was not big enough for their 50 amp rig (I suspect I'd be among them) the true 50 amp size is much more expensive.

It can buck or boost.. So if you are down in Meixco and looking at 130+ line voltages, it will BUCK it down to something closer to normal.

The MOV's (Surge supressors) are user replaceable.

That said. however.. I bought and installed a Hughes.

Love it so far

Couple of times I wished I"d had it in-line (Between purchase and install) now it's installed so it will be there when it's needed. Plus, now that it is installed.. One less thing to "Wrangle"

I went with the Hughes and have been very satisfied and have it in line permanently in my umbilical cord compartment... I can pop open the access door to see if it's in boost mode if necessary but I monitor line voltage with the Kill-a-Watt all the time anyway... If it would ever fail, both ends are on plugs and I can merely remove it from the circuit and operate without it while I send it in for service...

I think you'll like either one and they will perform as advertised... I haven't heard any complaints about either unit...

Neither will buck, they only boost. The Tripplite LC2400 will buck or boost and keep you good from 89 to 147 volts but it is only 20 amp rated.

Hughes has a new model that has 5%, 10% or 15% boost as needed.

Frank's optional superautomatic (I have this in 30 amp) will shut off power if voltage is too high or too low to boost. If buying today I would get the Hughes with three steps of boost and a separate surge guard to protect against uncorrectable voltage swings. A good surgegaurd also has a time delay to turn power back on that Frank does not have.

Oddly, todays the first time that my surge protector saved my bacon. Got back from a days outing and everything was fine in the MH until I noticed that the AC wasn't running and the invertor was powering the rest of my electrical needs of the MH. My surge protector turned off the power because when I tried reset it, the voltage was down to 92 volts. I noticed the AC next door was making a strange noise. I knocked on their door and they hadn't noticed that the power was so low. I contacted the office and they said that its not uncommon for that to happen, they showed me their ceiling fan which was barely turning. An hour later, the voltage was back to normal. Even my autoformer couldn't help with that low of a voltage.
