Factor in terrain, traffic and number of turns, too. They'll maybe average out but have an impact on overall mileage. So does altitude on some engines with electronic timing and mixture control.

FWIW: Here's how I do it. We take our trip. Then, when we get home, I total up the fuel receipts including gallons used and total miles traveled. Divide the gallons and dollars used by the miles traveled, and I get my total dollars spent per mile and average MPG. I know it's a little after the fact but I like surprises. Besides, wouldn't matter if I got 21 MPG or our usual 11MPG towing or if diesel fuel was $2 a gallon or $5 a gallon; we're still gonna take the trip.

Happy camping!!! See ya'll down the road!!!

When we get ready to take a trip, we use the trip planner on
this site. It gives you good sam parks along the way and
other options. I just print it off and take it with us,
We love it !

Miles traveled divided by Gallons used = MPG
Example, Iwent 500 miles and I used 50 gallon of fuel. 500 divided by 50 = 10MPG

Total fuel cost Divided by Miles traveled = Fuel Cost per mile
Example, 50 gallons at $4.30 @ Gal = $215.00 Divided by 500 miles = $ .43 per mile

Miles you want to travel that day divided by my average MPG = amount of fuel I will need to make the trip.
Example, I want to travel 250 miles today, I get 10 MPG, 250 divided by 10 = 25 gallons needed

This info can also be put in a Database file by making "Fields" for each catagory and then enter the formulas in the "Fields" that need to be calculated and when the knowns are filled in, it will calculate the unknowns.
"Miles Traveled" would be the first Field, "Gallons used" would be the next Field, "Total Cost of fuel" would be another field, MPG would be another Field and you would enter a formula in that field that would say,
=Miles Traveled/Gallons used and it will calculate MPG. And so on. Customize it to fit your needs. You could even add a Field for the name of the trip you are on. If you don't know how to create a spreadsheet or a Database it is kind of hard to explain in a short space.

I used the spreadsheet Microsoftworks 4.0 to create a simple fuel cost calculator. I could email it to you if you would like and have the program to open it (probably any spreadsheet would open and convert it).

I use the RVers Notebook software. I keep a complete history of all MH expenses and maintenance work with it. Along with the toad and the Gen Set. It then can easily produce reports for MPG and total Costs etc. The hardest part is recording the information before losing the receipts.
