Hi.

I'm a full-timer that's recently become a Florida resident. Got Florida
plates for the 5er and the Tow Vehicle. They only issued a single plate for the rear of the pick-up truck.

Will there be any problem driving the truck around in states that require both a front and a rear plate? Do I need to special-order a front Florida plate (if Florida even offers that service)?

Do all the other states have to honor Florida's way of doing things?

Thanks for any light you can shed on this.

Many states only have a single plate! North Carolina is another! You won't need a front plate, if your state doesn't have one. Other states know this, and don't bother you. Of course, I've found that it throws some of the gas station guys off a little, when they go to the front of the vehicle to check the plate for the credit care receipt, but that hardly ever happens any more!!

Enjoy!!

Drivers licenses, insurance requirements, and registration requirements are all covered by Reciprocity Agreements between the various states. What is legal in your home state is usually acceptable in every state you visit. I wouldn't bet on Reciprocity covering anything else, though (such as towing two trailers, length limits, etc.).

I'm in a somewhat similar boat with a TC. Only, the TC is considered cargo, not a trailer. Therefore, since the TC isn't licensed in Fl, (the insurance covers the TC under the truck policy) I'm only issued one plate. That's for the truck, But the TC overhangs the truck and the plate has to be visible. So... I have to move the plate from the truck to the camper, depending on whether the camper is loaded or off-loaded. I've had NO problems with the single plate in other states as long as the plate is displayed in the proper manner.

Haven't had a Delaware front plate ever, and we've never been questioned. The LEO's carry a book that gives them a summary of other states' laws. Not all, but enough.

In spite of what you see on TV and the movies, most vehicles in Florida do not have a front plate issued. Some semi trucks are an exception, and they display a front plate only.

Hollywood NEVER gets it right.

The answer is NO, you won't have a problem. If your state only issues one plate then that is all you need. Most every law enforcement officer has, and every one has access to, a book that lists how many plates the state issues and what they look like. I may even have an old copy of it myself (I was never an L.E.O., just a Dispatcher) But every department will have one, and many officers carry one with them.

I remember a lengthly thread about someone getting a ticket in Texas for only one plate from another state. Seems some LEOs like to show their authority on that one. Use it to open the door to check other things out. Don't remember the outcome except that the state the guys was from would issue a second plate for states like Texas to look at on the front.

You've all pretty much put my mind to rest. It would be unusual to get pulled over or ticketed for only having one Florida plate.

More and more states have red-light cameras, though, and they want to take pictures of that front plate as the car enters the intersection on the red light. That might prompt the single-plate states to start issuing two.
