I have had to clean out the floor vents several times because dust and sand get in them. They are for the furnace which we have not needed in a few weeks. I plugged the vent with foam from Lowe's to keep the stuff out. Is there a better way of keeping the dirt out? If I was home I would build some wood covers but we will not get back home until October. Do any of you have any suggestions? I looked for blank covers at Home Depot and CW but did not find any.
Thanks

I went to the heating dept at menards and got some magnetic vent covers and cut them to size. They work fairly well. If you have kids it may be a different story.
While I was there I also saw some that you could close that were our size

The other choice you have is to get some contact paper and cut to size / cover the vents.

I found and cut some very fine screening and my husband took them out. Instead of putting them on top of the vents he put them just under. I will go out and take them off and fit them over the top and around the side but I like the idea of the closable vents.

the magnets work-but for me, the dogs kept knocking em off.
had 2 thoughts, 1st was to remove em and wrap in plastic. have to be something heavy duty like cuting to fit something like freezer ziplock bags. still may not hold up to traffic all that well. 2nd thought was the ole stand by-duct tape. have seen it sold in different colors(unless you like the original) to maybe match the floor better. think i'd still remove the covers and wrap it around the edges

I believe your talking about registers, not vents, because they aren't for ventilation. Now that we have the correct terminology, just go to Lowes and buy replacement registers that open and close. Vacuuming any dirt out or sand will be a lot easier because it's not falling down in the ductwork and look a lot better.

The factory installed covers in our TT were the closeable type made of plastic. After using the furnace, the flaps on 2 of the covers sagged in the middle from the heat and no longer close. We removed those 2 flaps and will probably get some metal covers.

Whatever you come up with to cover or block them, make sure that you uncover them before you use your furnace again.
Obstructing all the air flow could damage the system.

How about using old pantyhose? Carefully slide it over the register, cut the end and screw back down. Will keep the dust, sand out, is cheap and easy and usually wife will have an old pair of hose laying around somewhere!
