Eastern Washington folk I want to place a bird feeder with seed for birds when I go visit this summer. What kind of bird seed should I use? I don't know what kind of birds are in the mountains north of Spokane.

Actually, you can go wrong with black oil sunflower. That seed is universal but buy a quality brand from a store like Wild Birds Unlimited. There are others and they all sell a quality product. You can buy it from Wally World and local co-ops but you don't get a value product. You get lots of shells without seed, twigs and small stones. If you want a blended seed as well go with a songbird mix that a bird seed store will have. Finally, to see some other types of birds stick out a few oranges cut into quarters.

You've got that right! You will get the migrating-thru birds that you don't even know are ever in your area. And there are a LOT of different species that migrate through any given area.
I enjoyed seeing all these non residents birds in spring so I expanded on your idea to get them to stop for an energizing snack before continuing on;
Take a wire coat hanger and unwrap it. Spear a couple of whole oranges and apples on the wire and paste some peanut butter on part of it, turn the straight end back up so they don't fall off.
The hook at the top of a coat hanger makes a great way to hang it.
