I am looking at possibly trading trucks. Any one using the V10? I have asked around a little and the only complaint I seem to hear is low end torque when pulling out. I would like a little input, especially from anyone who might be using it.

Looking at the $'s the diesel is about $5000 more up front and $1.00 more per gallon for fuel. I am told by the local dealer I can expect about the same milage towing?

Again any input would be greatly appreciated.

I have used the V10 in a E series van & a Class A motor home. It worked fine for both applications, although I would have preferred a diesel pusher in the Class A

Been pulling with one for 8 years without any problems, no mater what the dealer may try and tell you get the 4.30 rear end, that will solve any low end torque problems.

My new truck as well as my last truck both had V-10s. While the low end torque may be lower than a diesel it more than strong enough to tow any trailer I care to pull.
The dealer is somewhat right. This year the diesels had to meet EPA standards and meeting them has severely hurt their MPG dropping it down to the V-10 range.

I am own my 3rd V10 TV. I have had many gas engines over the last 45 years towing and the V10 is the best of all of them. I have the 3:73 rear end and really would like the 4:10 but it still does a good job towing my 34 ft TT

just a thought - will you get as good gas mileage with the V10 as the diesel? We have a Forrd F-350 with a 6.4L diesel and after my husband adding a new exhaust system for $600, he's getting 16 mpg in the city. Not sure what a V10 gets for mileage but perhaps the difference would negate that extra $1 per gallon charge.

Tows great. 3.73 is ok up to about 10k. If you plan to go near max towing get the 4.10 rear end.

I did the math one day on that one, it worked out until diesel went $.80 above diesel. I had a 04 Chev 2500 4x4 crew cab w/ the 6.0 gas motor and now have an 05 Dodge 2500 2wd crew cab with the Cummins. I got 13.5 mpg out of the chev and I get 21 mpg out of the Cummins. Like I said, as far as price per mile, the Cummins was holding it's own for a while in that single category.

My fiver weighs near 12k loaded for the weekend. Pull it with an '06 F350, V10, 4.30.

I have never needed more torque when pulling into and out of campgrounds, whether they were dirt, paved or gravel. Don't typically see more than 2,000rpm when in the campgrounds. Never spun the tires.

Gas mileage: My normal towing is 9mpg. If I am in the hills/mountains of the southeast, it drops, but then I am not one to slow down.

I have never once regretted my V10 purchase. I bought a vehicle well-equipped to pull a 12k fiver. I didn't buy it to drive around unloaded. I laugh when my neighbor brags that his Dodge gets 20mpg going to the grocery store. Not my bag of tea.

Bought a new 2008 F-350, dually a year ago. Has a 4:30 rear end. Also bought a new Open Road, EW of 12,300#, GVWR of 16,100#, actual tow weight of between 15,000# and 15,300#. I thought long and hard about the 6.4 diesel but the extra cost ($6,895) for the engine and the price of fuel made me go V-10. I don't regret a minute of it. My mpg empty is about 12 on the road, worse in city. Towing probably averages 7.8-8.1. I think about the little better mileage when empty with the diesel but the extra money up front for the engine would take for ever to re-coup. Last winter I towed the trailer over the TN mountain and back on I-24 and while I didn't rush up the mountain, I think it did real well. To sum up, consider up-front engine cost, price of fuel, and maintenance is much higher plus it does the job real well.
