I was curious to know of anybody that uses the portable exercise kennels that I have seen at Tractor Supply Company and Petsmart? We have an old Lab and a young Jack Russell and would like to use one of these at the campgrounds. Would one be enough or would I have to get two and put them together?

I had 3 of them hooked together and my 2 of my 3 dogs actually climbed them to get out. Try www.ryanspet.com They have pretty good prices on their stuff too.

We've got 2 or 3 X-pens that we bring with us....depending on what we're going to be doing...for our 5 Papillons. They are small dogs, so we only need the 24" height pens. As mentioned before, we also clip them together, and make a big ring.

I'm planning on setting up a better system, and using something to go under the steps, so I can have the pen right there as the dogs go outside, instead of having to climb into their pen.

But, yeah, I think the pens are great....it keeps your dog away from other dogs that might be loose, and they have some room to walk around, vs. being on a tether.

The only hassle...the weight and storage of the X-pens. I have a "back porch" platform on my receiver hitch, to carry them.

You'll definitely want more than one....maybe even three of them.

Enjoy

I have (3) 36" tall X-Pens from Precision, bought them online from Petco, they were on sale with free shipping. They have the "walk-thru" gate design. I found that I needed a minimum of 2 pens since I do attach my pens to the trailer as you want to, one pen was not enuff. I have a minature weiner dog & a greyhound. I used a piece of vinyl soffit to put behind the steps to prevent escapes and it is attached to the xpens. In the photo I am using the wooden steps, but I have since changed to a set of nice lightweight spa steps, but I still use the soffit behind the steps. It IS wonderful to be able to just open the door and let the pups out, plus the pens are wonderful for preventing that unwanted excape. Ever try to catch a greyhound?

I have 7 pens by precision, and I can have a yard big enough for the dog to go in and out of the trailer at will. I have trained our dog that he is not allowed to touch the fence or jump on it to greet people when the come to visit, under the steps the whol length of the 5er and 12 feet out from thr trailer and down conecting with the back, Tie wraps and rebar for the post I'll find a picture and post it later.

We have a small Bichon, we got 2 of the 24" ones. She was out of those in 2 weeks, right over the top. So we got 2 of the 36" tall ones and no problem. She hasn't even tried to climb over them. When in tight spaces we only use one, but 2 give her the freedom to move around.
We won't be without ours.

We take 2 xpens for our 2 samll dogs and they work perfect! We also use one in the MH to confine them in the kitchen/hallway area when we leave them in the MH.

There IS an answer for those that have dogs that climb out.

I learned the hard way how fast a MinPin can scale an ex-pen, by the time I yelled 'loose dog' at a show she hit the ground running across an acre lot and into the building.
And the rescue I put him in and before all four feet hit the ground he is back out when and if he chooses.

Midwest crate makes a 'wonderful' light weight cover for expens. They are gold and match theirs and the petco brand. You do have to keep it in the square formation, but let me tell you it is SOOO nice to be able to go inside the MH and let them stay out all day without any worries about them getting out or stray's getting in at them.

Do these guys looked stressed out having to be in an ex-pen?

Note I still clip the top for safety.

And I roll up a towel and put it on top along the hinge so when I flip the front up it doesn't go crashing all the way down, it stops at the towel.

I buy them direct but if you google midwest ex pen covers you can find a dealer near you.

And if you really want to go all out for their comfort buy a sunscreen for the top. Lets air in but shades the sun.
This is pricey but well worth it, I bought mine in 1980 and it still looks brand new, worth the price.

We use 2 18" tall x-pens connected together. They fit behind the steps. I only have toy poodles and they haven't tried to jump it. Wouldn't be without them.

We use one for our three Pomeranians. Wouldn't leave home without it.
Folds flat and stores well.
