Does anyone know of any good boondocking areas in or around the Flagsstaff area? We really don't want to stay at a designated campground this trip. We are looking for something a little more private/primitive. Any help would be appreciated. THanks.

There is boondocking near Sunset Crater National Momument. If you stop at the ranger station, they will give you a map of the area that shows where you can camp. There is a large ATV area. (as of 2004, not been back since.)

One mile north of Munds Park - exit at Willard Springs and go left up past trash compactor...lots of sites

Also checkout the coconino national forest website- they detail some dispersed camping areas. There are so many places to stay! Hart Prairie area is real nice on the back side of the peaks.

There are lots of good places near Mormon Lake. Also just south of the south rim of the Grand Canyon.

Lots of places to camp. Pick up a Coconino Nat Forest map and pick a road. What sort of rv do you have and what type of camping do you like? If just a place in the forest, nothing special I can tell you a couple spots, tho not that close to Flag.

I'll second the area off US-89 near Sunset Crater (turn west at the entrance road... go in a half mile, and there are several spots for the taking on any given weekend. Take the ATV's up to Lockett Meadow & park 'em for a nice hike up Mt. Humphrey.

Just don't take the motorhome up to Lockett Meadow like we did a year ago... We made it both ways, but it was raining when we left, and I was seriously concerned the road was going to be washed out in a few places.
