Thanks for the suggestions and advice.
We are kinda moving through the area without any reservations currently, kinda at will. We are planning on hitting Reserve America just as we arrive in Las Vegas and see what is available for the following three weeks. Private CG are ok too, Boondocking, or even a Walmart for those overnight stops, just trying to get a handle on what state CG to visit and which ones to avoid.
Do you think I'd still have difficulty with mid week stay's? It was our intentions to move in-land on the weekends to avoid the crowds.
Thanks again!
Jay
if it's a coastal state park, mid-week won't matter. they tend to be booked up, every day, during the summer. most coastal campsites are gone by February. it's even tough, off season, for a mid-week campsite at a coastal state park.

I actually have a reservation at Jed Smith in the Redwoods for a couple of nights that I am planning on cancelling. I don't know if you are going that far north or if you are interested in that particular campground. PM me if you want to talk about it.
g0tta go with 3Xblessed- Carlsbad in northern San Diego is incredible. Can't help or don't know about reservations- but if you can get in there, do it!
We camp on the coast often and the comments about reservations is 100% correct. The only options I can think of in central CA on or near the coast without advanced reservations are,
Marina Dunes RV Park in Marina - just north of Monterey on Hwy 1. ~1/4 mile walk on sand dunes to the ocean.
Moss Landing RV Park in Moss Landing - a bit further north of Monterey. On the harbor and maybe 1/2 mile walk to the beach.
Santa Cruz KOA in Aptos - just south of Santa Cruz, a bit inland and requires a 15 min drive to get to Manresa Beach day use area.
I would however recommend calling them before just showing up on their door steps as I've seen large groups take over these parks for weeks at a time.

Wouldn't even try Carlsbad. Carlsbad state beach is notorious for being booked WAY in advance and usually sells out within an hour of opening up the summer months. Has been that way since I was a 9 year old (and younger) and we would camp for a week at Carlsbad. I'm over 40 now and it's still the same except it's by phone now and in the old days my mom and dad would go down to the ticket place and sit in line hours before it opened to get their week.
Around here, during summer, it does not matter whether it's the weekend or weekday. EVERYTHING along the coast or close to the coast or driving distance to the coast has been booked solid months ago.
If you check out the California State Parks webpage and do a search for "enroute camping" you will find some parks that let you stay overnight for just one night. There are some first-come, first-served campgrounds in addition to those already mentioned. Seacliff State Beach has some spots, although they are basically just in a parking lot right next to the beach. I believe that the Moss Landing Harbor will let you camp there for a fee if the RV park is full. There is also Memorial Park in Monterey (but check the length restrictions on the County Parks website). Costanoa is not widely known (just north of Santa Cruz) so they may not be so booked. Also check out Port San Luis Harbor District.
Things do get really booked up here in the summer, but I think there may be some cancellations due to fuel prices.

Thanks
I will certainly save these parks in my California folder
I'm really hoping that the fuel prices stabilize on the one hand, but hoping that the high cost of fuel frees up some sites along the way on the other hand.

This is why I go to Oregon's coast. Never a problem and nicer beaches.

I just checked reserveamerica.com for Sunset State Beach and they have quite a few one night stays available over the next month. Henry Cowell has a few sites with multiple night stays available.
