Anyone cutting down on travelling because of the high fuel prices?
I was thinking about buying a motorhome this summer, I'm not so sure anymore about it.
Maybe I should keep the 10 year old camper and 7 year old diesel truck for now.
The last couple of years we travelled all over Canada.
This year I doubt we even go into Alberta.
I'm staying longer at the nice campsites these days and stay in my home province British Columbia.
Any comments?

Everyone's situation is different. It depends on your priority and how long you think you will live. If you don't do it now you may never do it. It is also a time to focus on higher quality...saving your fuel for really important trips. Whcih is better, one long trip to a place you alweays wanted to go? Or a lot of short trips? To each his own. We will be traveling in B.C. this summer and next year to Alaska. If that means cancel the newspaper subscription and other things, so be it.

I am definitely more conscious of my fuel use than I have been in past years. I just made a 1200 mile round trip from Pittsburgh to Boston and back. The diesel cost about double what airfare would have been. Last year I wouldn't even have made the comparison.
We don't go far afield anyway, as DW prefers to spend the time camping rather than driving, but even a weekend trip to a state park (our preferred destinations) in Ohio, Pennsylvania or West Virginia cost $200 in fuel. That doesn't break the bank but it sure isn't chump change!
When not camping, the truck is parked!

If the price of fuel wasn't enough, remodeling a bathroom was enough to put on the brakes. Don't have the time or money to waste.

Campers don't have motors and last near forever and your diesel is only 7 years old - they're both near new in my book. Unless you "need" a motorhome - I think you should keep what you have.

I follow along with your thinking. We are empty nesters with no grandchildren on the horizon. We would just as soon do the travel now while we are in our 50's when we are mobile and can enjoy it. Even if it means a little deficit spending. One of my motto's is I would rather be in my rocking chair talking about the great life I had rather than talking about the things I wish I had done.

Paoli, you just need to come and travel the states, our fuel is cheaper here than Canada, and with the money on par, the more the merrier.
Going camping July 11th-14th, probably get 3-4 trips in this year, all of them in-state.

I try to combine local trips but so far haven't canceled any long trips.
We are lucky to have a low cost rig that is all paid for so that helps.

Would I like to see cheaper fuel....sure.
Will the prices keep me at home.....No way.
Will we cut back on the wasted money (pop, chips, meals out, etc.) to help save money for camping....you bet!
I only use the truck for camping and the way I see it if I was still staying in hotels then I would not be spending as much on the fuel but would be giving it to the hotels for rooms and meals.

...we're just a hair below $7.00 a gallon (Canadian-sized gallon) this morning for 89 octane! Close to $240 to fill the tank. It appears that retail gas will go substantially higher than this; we're expecting it to hit around $10 a gallon (in Quebec) perhaps by end of July.
Anyone from the US coming up here this summer better bring a briefcase full of cash with you
