Does anyone have a good route to travel from route 78 in Harrisburg to Providence Rhode Island. Our plan is to time things so I can avoid traffic in or around NY. We will be in our 36' motorhome Thanks Fred

I-78 East to I-287 North and then east (287 is a loop) to cross the TappenZee Bridge, and then on to I-95 north of NYC. Another option would be to take I-287 North until you get to I-87 North (NYS Thruway), then take the T'way to I-84 East into CT. Once you hit the Danbury area, there are several routes that you can use to drop down to I-95.
Now if you REALLY want to avoid the NYC area, take Route 22 off of I-78 in Allentown to Route 33 North to I-80 East to Route 209 North (through Watergap National Park) to I-84 East. Route 33 is a 4-lane divided highway, and the Watergap Park is very nice. It's a great alternative route, and it cuts out all the NJ/NYC area, but it is a bit longer.

We just returned to Ohio from a trip to Rhode Island last week. We also wanted to avoid NYC congestion. The route we took, after obtaining suggestions from the forum, was easy to travel, with good roads, and no construction of any significance.
Parts of our route may be an option for you:
1) I-80 across PA to I-81, then north on I-81 to I-84 at Scranton.
2) I-84 took us across eastern PA and NY north of NYC.
3) South of Hartford, CT we dropped down to I-95 on CT Route 9.
4) I-95 north will then take you right into Providence.
We use 81 out of Harrisburg Area to Scranton then 84 across to Connecticut and if you feel you need to go to 95 then leave 84 at Exit 11 and follow 34 to New Haven and 95 to Providence.
I do not go that way!
I stay on 84 to Hartford, 384 in Hartford to Quarryville, then get on Route 6 and go to Providence.
Where in Providence are you going???? North, South, East or West?
There are several ways to go from 84 to Providence!
Good Luck

nor-easter brings up a good point about I-95. We stayed in Point Judith area at Fisherman's Memorial SP approx. 45 minutes south of Providence. This was the reason for using I-95. Route 6 would seem to be a more direct route out of CT to Providence than I-95 would be. Thanks.
