Advice on going from central NC to Bar Harbor area? I want to avoid the big cities. Thinking of going through VA via 81 and then connecting to I-84 east near Scranton and then perhaps I-87 north? Then I'm not sure which route is best east from there--90 to 95 or Route 2 in Mass. or one of the routes in Vermont and cross NH? Would appreciate experienced advice--esp. on the northern end of this but any part of it.
I usually go up US-29 from Greensboro to Charlottesville. Then I-64 west across Blue Ridge Mts to I-81. Easy cross over Blue Ridge on I-64. Take I-81 to Scranton then I-84 across PA, NY and CT. Get on Mass Pike (I-90) to I-495 and 495 to 95 etc. When I took this trip last year, I-84 from Scranton and across NY was really in bad shape. a real bumpy ride. Shook my microwave loose. Good luck.

This is as good as any; but if you have extra tine stay on 81 north and up 87 thru Albany, NY to Glens Falls and across Rt 4 into Vt, then go thru NH and on to Maine. great ride.

The 81,84,87 part of your plan is good. From there, 90, 495, 95 is your best choice for making good time and not seeing much of northern New England. Route 2 would be a good option if you have a few days to spare for sightseeing.
Thanks for the helpful advice! Have driven north & south in VT & NH but not "across" and it doesn't appear there are any quick routes. Like the idea of getting into Norman Rockwell area and I know Route 2 is a pleasant drive as is 90. Hope 84 is improved. As hot as it's been for a few days the cool area there sounds real inviting! A few years ago our son lived near Springfield, MASS, and we traveled 84; depending upon time of day, we sometimes got into a good bit of congestion through the "bury" areas. But, it's good that we can get to 84 and make decision depending upon time, weather, etc., as to which option to choose. Again, thanks!

Right. N/S travel through northern New England via interstates is pretty good, but E/W (or W/E!) is limited to picking your way across on other roads. Again, if you have the time to spend, might as well see something other than trees, big trucks and toll booths. I haven't done it for a long time, but the word is that Rt. 2 is a good ride. Happy trails!
