You had to know the price drop would happen, with the cost of diesel skyrocketing. I look for the "diesel premium" to fall accordingly in the next few years, if the price difference remains. They've been ripping folks knew ones for years with this "premium".
Quote: Diesels also carry a higher purchase premium, ranging from $5,500 to $7,000. Their engines and transmissions are built using sturdier components to handle the higher compression and combustion pressures and torque output. And newly required emissions hardware (mandated as of January 2007), like diesel particulate filters implemented to reduce soot levels, has added even more cost and complexity to diesel-equipped HD pickups. Some estimates put the added costs at $1,500 or more.
The premium for a diesel equipped truck is expected to rise again next year as manufacturers roll out new pickups compliant with even tougher 2010 emissions regulations aimed to reduce nitrogen oxide emissions (NOx). Most NOx-scrubbing engines will require periodic fill-ups of urea, adding a new maintenance expense for diesel owners.
When we bought our 2005 F-350 6.0 (see sig) I bought it as a truck I would drive/tow with for 15 + years. I'm opening up the exhaust/intake and putting a BD tuner in it to improve mileage and add a little power (use low setting to tow, middle setting for everyday), so can still afford to drive it.
That said we're really lucky in that we live where there are lots of beautiful & historic things to see, places to fly, fishing to do and activities for our grand kids and campgrounds in our club within a 500-600 mile radius, so we will continue to travel.
We may not be towing to see the kids in Nashville, visiting the friends in the Knoxville, the Carolinas, Kentucky, Alabama, Massachusetts and New York however. Much as I hate to say it we'll probably fly - UNLESS this is a "bubble" and fuel comes down under $4.00.
Oh, I did delete the link. DW rarely looks at my computer, but just in case........

I personally don't see where resale value has dropped at all. The only thing I see falling is the trade-in value. The dealers in my area are still jacking the prices, of both new and used pickups, as high as the market will bear. No different than what's happening with oil prices. It's got nothing to do with actual production costs.

True, dealers are using the fuel prices to justify the pathetically low trade-in price they are offering. But the used price is full retail (at least around here).

I will budget $6,500 for fuel from June 08 to June 09. I am using 5.00 per gallon as the price and projecting to drive 15,000 miles with 5,000 mi towing and the rest empty. I have one more house to sale and then travel to different locations every three to four months.
I had rather buy fuel than pay property taxes.....
I will keep my truck until I get a heaver 5er. Then I'll go for a 5500 CC Ram.
