Need advice.

Have a 7.5 Onan diesel generator in a 2004 Dutch Star coach. Low mileage and very low hours on both. Has been in covered storage for a year but a few trips and weekly (almost) start up and putting load on generator. Had it out this week-end and noticed that after an hour under load (A/C and fridge), it shut down whether while moving or parked. Did this three or four times. I let rest, and it restarts fine. Fuel tank full, oil and coolant full.

Any ideas what is causing it to shut down ? Troubleshooting recommendations ?

Thanks very much.

I think that a common issue a faulty oil pressure sending switch. If oil pressure falls it will kill the engine. I had to replace the switch on a 5500 Onan on our previous MH.

Did you notice the fault code when it shut down?

How many hours are on it? Have you ever replaced the fuel filter? Every 200 hours if I remember correctly. They will run ok at light loads but when the load increases, which steps up the RPM, which demands more fuel and it bogs down. NAPA carries them.

the whole model number would be a great place to start
when it shuts down does the start/stop light blink? if so how many times?
1 is overheat
2 is low oil pressure
3 times you push stop once and it will give you a 2 didgit code blink blink pause blink blink blink pause blink blink pause blink blink blink pause... would be a 23 code

Jim:
Welcome to the forum.

Got to sift through some of the advice presented here, some folks mean well.

Does it display any fault codes? The start/stop switch has a light in it. After a shut down, does it blink? The manual will instruct you in how to get to the actual trouble code. Kevin (kg5388) touched on how to do that.

Could be slightly low on coolant, overheating, a restricted fuel filter, cracked or kinked fuel line.

Be sure you have at least 1/2 a tank of fuel to eliminate the possibility of it starving for fuel.
