Ok, we have a DirectTV satellite on a tripod, for use with one of our boxes out of the house. DH has been trying to get it to work in the TT, which is in our back yard right now.
Elevation set for 45 per Direct, Azimuth should be 215. Is this the compass setting? I was told to basically point the dish South and it should pick it up, but we are having no luck. How do I set the azimuth?
DH says it's pointed right, but it looks like it's pointed right at a tree to me!
Thanks for the help.
Oh, I did do a search before I asked and didn't find what I was looking for.

the 215 is the compass setting. If you are pointed at a tree, you may not get a signal at all. I suggest moving around the tree and aiming the dish at 215 degees. A signal meter helps as does an "Align a Site" which I got at Camping World.

Hi,

The most important thing is to make sure you are level. If you aren't starting level, the elevation setting will not be correct. My tripod has a bubble level that helps a ton. After that, find north, and adjust accordingly to aim at +/- 215. Also remember to move the tripod in very small increments to fine tune - and wait a few seconds to get the signal. Spinning around frantically looking for a signal just looks funny to the other campers.........Trees shouldn't be a huge deal - I've achieved +90% signal through dense trees....

Good luck....happy camping...!

maple.leafs.fan - Thanks, last thing DH would want is to look silly to other campers! LOL! I think the level is the problem. Our yard takes a downhill where he had the Sat. placed. We'll give it a try again!

I assume you have checked the settings for your current location and are using them? and yes, won't work too good thru a tree.

Ours will not work through trees. If I got a good clear view of the southern sky. I can setup in about 15 min. Very important the tripod is level.

Bumpy - The trailer is in our back yard, so the settings would be the same as the house, or at least it should be!

Well you could move the tree...

Get a $30 Satellite Finder, crank up the gain and adjust the dish. If you didn't lock onto the right bird then it will be slightly to the left or right.

With this technique I don't level the dish holder, never preset the elevation and rarely get out the compass. None of that is necessary to latch onto a single bird and just takes extra time.

1- Level the tripod (mast)
2- Using the scale on the dish, set the elev to the info on the screen
3- using a compass, set the Azimuth as close as possible to the info on screen
4- put the tv on the signal meter and turn up the volume
5- start swinging the dish slowly left and right (east and west) till the chirping starts to speed up.
6- fine tune elev and azimuth to fastest signal speed

Note:
w/ direct tv, an inline signal meter will find wrong satellites, the receivers signal meter won't,...it will only find 110
