It will make a sweet little GPS device, plus an iPod plus a cell phone for less than most GPS's now on the market.

To bad it's on AT&T's cheesy network or I'd switch myself.

I guess you have recent experience to support a statement such as this. I have no complaints about AT&T coverage, the 450 minutes of voice (w/rollover minutes) and unlimited data I get for $51.98/month combined, or the fact that I can use my "cheesy" service in many foreign countries at rates that put credit card calls to shame.

ATT's network makes Nextel's look like string and tin cans. ATT is investing hundreds of millions into Cingulars old system. It works great in Florida. 3G is as fast or faster as my home DSL.

That's why the IPhone is going 3G. AT&T now has 3G service (I have it on my laptop with AT&T's 875U USB card). Now the service will be on the new IPhones, because they now are 3G capable (or at least when they are released).

From what I saw of the GPS function it is not going to replace my Garmin Nuvi anytime soon. There is no voice commands and it appears nothing more than a mapping GPS and not a 3D in motion. It would be probably better for planning trips than using it under way.

Actually it does do motion. TomTom has already announced a software packaged to go on there as have several other companies. Also a recent interview with an unnamed GPS exec said that they were very concerned about the competition from the iPhone 3G because it is an excellent all-in-one package: full touchscreen, GPS, PDA functions, full phone, video, mp3, and internet (wifi + 3G)

I've just sold my 16GB iPhone on Ebay so I can buy the next one!

Having been on most "cheesy" networks from the times of the "brick" cell phones at $4.00/min, nationwide, AT&T trumps them all, including Verizon that is in the midst of a ground-up system wide rebuild. We'll see how that turns out..

The first-gen iPhone only had pseudoGPS based on cell tower and wifi site interpolation. The new iPhone promises more. And it should be a good base to layer on added software from TomTom and the like. Not too many dedicated gps devices can make much use of the Google Earth. This should be interesting as the device is open enough to invite RV widgets.

Folks at my work travel all over the country, and our work Blackberry's are on AT&T. Everyone agrees coverage is not nearly as good as their personal Verizon phones.

Not scientific, just an observation.
