We have a good friend thinking about a 2008 Roadtek SS-Agile. Any comments pro or con may help them make a hard decision easier. Gas mileage, room, handling, ease of use anything would help. Thanks for your time and hope you are having a GREAT camping season.

Until someone who actually knows replies.... The V-6 Agile's strong points over the RT 190 or PW Lexor on the Chevy chassis are maybe if he's going to really roll up the miles, or is going to drive at high altitude a lot, or he really likes a cramped but enclosed bathroom.

In about the same length, the less pricey 190 & Lexor have considerably more usable space and storage. The fuel cost per mile is pretty much the same at present. The gas generator is an advantage for some uses. However, even tho' the new 190 is more open than previous models, it's not as much so as the Agile, so the Agile is maybe better suited to drive-by sightseeing .

I have a RT SS-Agile. I bought it new in April. It is a 2007 model, which is built on a 2006 Sprinter chassis. The reasons I looked for the '07 model are better mpg than the '08 (24 on hwy) and price. The 08's are going for around $92,000 and mine was in the low $70's. So far, I love it. I've been driving it as my main vehicle, so I could get used to handling, backing, parking, etc. before I take it on the road to Montana for the summer.

Hey Handbasket,
Are you comparing the fuel cost per mile of the 190 with the Lexor or with the Agile? With diesel here at $4.51 and gas at $3.88, it's still cheaper to drive a diesel Agile at 24 mph than the gas 190 at 14. That's $338 for me to drive the 1800 miles to Bozeman, MT next week rather that $498.

(Not trying to turn this into a fuel thread, but the original post did ask about Agile gas mileage.)

We bought a 2007 SS Agile which is on the 2006 Sprinter and love it. We had some issues in the beginning with the dealer and manufacturing problems but RT resolved the problems eventually. They ended up taking it back to the factory to fix the problems. Now that the problems have been fixed we are very pleased with it. I get around 20 MPG average. I also drive at 70MPH on the interstates. I now have about 9000 miles on it. The best part of it is that you can go anywhere a normal van can go. This includes parallel parking on city streets and parking in any normal parking place. The only problem is you need to keep the height in mind. You need a little over 9 feet of height. I think it drives great and the ride is as good as a car. You do however need to carry only what you are going to need and use. No bringing extra because I might need it. It is perfect for touring and sightseeing.

In some parts of the country diesel is 25% more per gallon. Also most have reported at least 2mpg drop on the new sprinter chassis. So a gas chevy and the larger 08 adventurous 08 might finally be on par in those parts of the country. However I suspect even the new chassis on the shorter agile would still save you fuel money over a chevy.

That being said don't forget handbasket's last point, the agile and adventurous are both much more open of a design than any chevy chassis B (that I've seen).
Thats an important thing to encourage buyers to look at. Means a lot more than MPG to me.

Yep. It did ask about fuel mileage. Specifically on an '08, which would be the V-6 chassis, which my reply stipulated. Not sure, but I think yours is an I-5?

Here, the difference between gas and diesel is currently $.80-$.96, and my '02 5.7l Chevy 190 got 15+ mpg without generator usage (apples to apples) in steady cruising. So as I said, there's not much difference in real world fuel costs at present. I'd seriously consider the Chevy 190 or Lexor as candidates, considering the difference in price.

Here in Minnesota the difference between regular gasoline and diesel has dropped to $.60. Last week diesel came down about $.20 and gasoline as everyone knows started climbing. When I bought the Sprinter in 2006 diesel was consistently cheaper. Last year in May in Indianapolis diesel was $.60 cheaper. This year it was a dollar higher than gasoline in Indianapolis and I paid a high of $4.959 there. Go figure.

Gas or diesel. It makes no difference when it may eventually come down whether you can or care to travel with the cost of rising fuel. I would recommend you consider most other factors about the design of the vehicle, the amenities, and how it feels to you. The way fuel prices fluctuate I don't think you can predict the future. We made our decision based on the design. The fuel was not a consideration and in fact was a venture into the unknown (diesel). What I like more about the diesel is the consistent 550 mile range we get on fillups. What I dislike the most is the pump handles are always contaminated and you need gloves to pump it.
