Do the drive! It is well worth it, just allow a little more for hotels. As for you mpg I bet you get more that 13 mpg.

One other thing to consider inmy neck of the woods (Alberta). The current surge in oil prices has created a mini-boom in oilfield work, and in many locations outside major centers, there are no motel/hotel rooms to be had! When I was working in Edson, I needed to reserve the room at least 3 weeks in advance to have one for the week. Prices were $100 to $150 per night.

In the days of yore (I know, what's yore? Scotch preferably, with kudo's to PHC), when I drove between Anchorage and ______________ (Spokane, Billings, Seattle, Boise, Idaho Falls, DFW!, etc), I didn't have an RV or unlimited funds. I found it quite pleasant to tent camp while traveling and stop at a motel every few days for a good long shower, etc.

Have similarly driven the entire road system (except the northern part of the haul road) and tented around Alaska. This was in my younger days..although as recent as 2003.

A car rental (car, not MH) currently runs $500/week or $1200/10days from Thrifty in Anchorage.

So, if you have time, I'd drive up, bringing tent and camping gear in your car and grab the motel every so often.

We have run all the numbers and it is most economical to rent a car in anchorage, bring a tent and rent motels when needed. I have also found that most rv parks have tent sites and showers. Laundry mats sometimes have showers as well. The hard part is getting the gear there..... See you in Alaska....

Thanks for all the info and I probably will take camping gear with me

as I am going for the drive. I really want to see as much as possible

of Canada and Alaska. My mini truck 4x4 gets about 18 to 20 mpg so

fuel is still my greatest expense.

Half the fun in going to Alaska is the drive up and back. However, one will need 2-3 months to really do things right. There are a lots of providence parks on the way up and a lots of "city Parks" in Alaska that are really nice that will cost you a lots less than $30.00 per night.
