I've traveled it a couple of times, so I'm not an expert, but there are some places that it's fine...multi-lanes, and others, where you're going thru towns, but still not bad. I don't think you'll have any problems, and there are at least places to stop for gas or a snack.

The quality of the roads are OK. They were working on them last time I was on it, about a year ago. I usually travel from Wilmington to I-95, so don't know as much about the western section of it, having only gone up past Charlotte 2-3 times in the past 3-4 years. Hope that helps.

Just made this route home from Pigeon Forge Saturday:

I-26 to 74 is a rough interstate - think the hwy dept forgot that area
74 east to I-85 north is 4 lane and not much traffic nice ride
I-85 to I485 is a busy interstate
I 485 to 74 east good road but don't hit that area during rush hour, you will be sitting still in the Pineville area
74 east to Hamlet is 4 lanes (which is where we live) From Stallings to Monroe is very congested. After Monroe to Hamlet your home free.

P.S. Hubby says after Rockingham take hwy 38 to Bennettsville merge onto 501 ending at Myrtle Beach.

Hope this helps out, need more help you can pm me.

Chick. Did the new by pass around Rockingham , and Hamlet, make Hamlet a ghost town. I remember how congested it would be during the holiday fridays.

74 is a good road. Easy ride. From Charlotte to North MB. We go 74 to 410 to 701, to 9 to 31 to 22 to NMB.

I would tell you how we go to South MB from 485. But then you'd go crazy trying to do it. But it involves Johnston RD off 485 to 521 to 9 to 903 to 151 (i think) to Darlington to Quemby,( to miss Florence) and then to 501. Really shortens the drive.

74 from I26 to I85 is no problem except for the few miles thru Shelby.

But why would go thru Charlotte? Wouldn't iot be easier to take I26 to Columbia, pickup I20 to Florence, then take 501 from there? Like This

Don't know about ghost town, but I'm sure it did effect it. We don't even go thu there any more since the by-pass. Wonderful road now and some parts are 65.

Hope I live long enough to see the by-pass from Matthews to Marshville (around Monroe). Now they are talking about it being toll road. Don't know if that will go over well or not.

Been there and done that route. We have went that way several times.38 to 501 to 544 is the shorter way to south Myrle Beach.I 485 goes around Charlotte, not thru.

Around or thru is samantics. I live here and take 485 all of time, even on the weekends it can get congested. Not to mention 74 thru Monroe.

A far as 'mileage', your planned route is approximately 320 miles (est 6h, 11m) - taking the I26, I20, I95 to 327 and 501 is 304 miles (est 5h, 7m)... but hey, its your gas and you're driving. I live 10 miles from 485 and when we go to MB, we take I485 to I77 to I20. It's shorter, faster and uses less fuel.

I would recommend avoiding I485 on the east side of I77 and 74 through Monroe. Best route we take is how mooreadventures goes. We are on the southside of Charlotte near 485.
