I know in this area for the government the Border Patrol has been hit hard.
Many vehicles on the road 24/7 and lots of aircraft too.
The costs just get passed along to the taxpayers eventually.

Don't forget about school systems. Some school systems are seeing fuel cost increases equivalent to or more than a teacher's salary.

We just got a notice yesterday that there will be no buses for our schools next year. Now I have to figure out how we are going to get our son to school at 8:30 when I have to leave the house by 6am and my wife by 6:30

I saw on news a couple of days ago that Dalton, GA PD working part of their shifts walking their beat. Also, Birmingham, AL Mayor changed city employees work week to 4 days. Good idea in both cases!

dmatt - how ironic.
I'm on a charter school board. We are entirely dependent on parents being willing to send their kids to our school to keep the doors open. We're expanding our bus routes next year because some parents can't afford the gas to drive their kids to our school.

Cutting off bus service entirely is probably more a result of school finances than the increased cost of fuel for the bus.
School districts here in Minnesota are in dire straits due to expenses increasing faster than revenues. Cutting bus service is a popular way to save money, but it really doesn't save much in the big picture.

I agree, but I think they're related to each other. He in CA, our gov has proposed cutting school budgets 10% to handle the budget crisis. Teachers have been given pink slips for next year. Since the fuel costs come from the school district's budget, it's either cut that cost or more teachers!!!
