My map shows route 78 (future 22) between Memphis and Birmingham. Had planned to take it. Any concerns - chopped up road, narrow? Major construction delays? Is it still 78 or is 22 well underway?

I think you'll find 78 to be a sweet drive. I've done this route 20 times over the years and it only gets better. It's a 4 to 6 lane road with hardly a car or truck, brand new pavement and beautiful scenery. Stop for gas at FlyingJ in Olive Branch, probably the lowest price fuel around. That's right outside of Memphis at MM 7 or 8.
There is a bad chunk at the end, the last 12 miles from 78 to 59/20 are local roads, but it's pretty fast and RV friendly. If you can avoid it, don't stop for gas in Birmingham, the prices are high and the stations in that area are notorious for bums and such hitting you up for smokes, quarters or whatever. I've never felt comfortable stopping there.

It's the closest thing to being an interstate without being an interstate.

Work is progressing on the last few miles in Alabama which will connect the road to I-65. Then, and only then, will that section of U.S. 78 become I-22.

Good road - no problems unless you need a place to stay......There are not a lot of places to overnight....
By the way----you will be real close to Tiffin --- Allegro factory at Red Bay. It is a nice place to visit and do the RV factory tour if you have time.

I was on the road last week coming to Colorado from Florida. Good road, somewhat slow for the first few miles out of Birmingham due to stop lights, local traffic, etc. The Olive Branch Flying J was where I found the best prices also. Plus an easy in and out. My GPS had me make a left turn, to the west prior to getting into Memphis proper and I basically did a bypass of town. I was towing my Jeep behind so I was somewhat apprehensive about Memphis but it turned out to be just fine.

sp8gold, I think the road has actually be open for less than a year. I had the same problem but I did have a new Alabama map to consult. I just turned the GPS off during that stretch.
