The Lake was drained in 82 to facilitate silt removal. I wasn't there just read it in the chicago tribune today. The floodgates on the dam were open but the water was to much for them and the heavily saturatated soil gave way.

Judging by the stumps in the lake, its size is man-made. To me that means that that section of the lake that gave way is a man made earthen dam or dike. Since there's no report of them opening the lakes flood gates to mitigate the heavy rain flow and prevent overloading the lakes design, I can only assume that the lake is an almost entirely earthen construct. Further commentary by others that the lake has "Drained" itself once before only would reinforce my statement that the lake needs to be re-engineered with something other than an earthen structure at its weaker shores.

They in fact had the dam wide open; it was just that the lake had more water running into it than they could get out and it jumped it's banks, washing out a road and then it drained.!

Sounds like its time to re-engineer the dam then and increase the size of her spill ways. Our river dams out here have spillways large enough to dump half their resevoir in minutes. They may need to build similar capacity into the dam before they refill the lake.

When I clicked on the link, the video showed damage to an apartment complex in Richton Park, IL. My husband and I lived in that apartment complex in 1977-79.
YIKES! It gave us chills. It truly is devastating.

What's happening with that link is they UPDATE the news, it changes.
The Dells clip was replaced with Richton flooding.

Now there is another dam that is expected to break in Mucownogo(sp?).

All these news videos of Wisconsin flooding look as bad if not worse as the Katrina flooding. Yet it certainly is not getting the same news coverage. Maybe because everyone is helping each other, families and townspeople banding together to help the home owners in distress, instead of crying to the government for free fema trailers.

I was able to page thru till the third page of videos and they have it posted there....a truly amazing video to see.

Thanks for the correct name!

Another fun thing to watch is 'after' the show.
Stick around and watch these guys take these ski boats out of the water!

The truck and trailer 'fly' backwards down the ramp and the driver of the boat comes into the ramp full speed and 'flies' up on to the boat trailer, driver still on the boat and they take off!!

Proving that, yes, you CAN get a boat out of the water in less than 20 minutes.
