OP hype! Talk about a total lack of checking the story!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! J

Geeze louis, don't shoot the messenger.

Early news feeds stated it that way, storms spawn tornadoes/heavy rains devaste the Dells.

The video clip I provided 'clearly' showed that the ground had given way due to heavy rains which drained the lake.
I didn't think I had to 'on edit'.

For those who did not view the supplied video clip in the op:
Here is your 'On Edit';

No, a tornado did not come down and suck up the lake in the Dells.

Looks like this time round they might want to build concrete dam structures with a better spillway mitigation system so they can run the water down before a collapse occurs again.

From the way its described, the dam (road A) holding the water back was an entirely earthen dam and very limited spillway systems, if any.

My heart goes out to those effected, but time to build it better for the future.

While not destroyed by overfilling, a similar dam structure was built on Diamond lake to facilitate draining. The original dam was a road/earthen structure at the north end of the lake.

Where do you people get your stories from? No part of the dam every broke way. A very large section of earth and road gave way to the flooding water over it and created a ravine 50 feet deep for the lake to drain through.

So did it ruin Dam Rd. as well? I finally found a map online and that is a lot of water!!! I had forgotten just how big that lake really is. Did anyone get hurt?
We have a dam that hopefully won't break. The Coralville res. is threatening to go over the spillway. Should happen tonight. This would be around 29,000 cubic feet per second draining into the river below, displacing hundreds. Even getting close to the all mighty casino just down the road from my house.

Judging by the stumps in the lake, its size is man-made. To me that means that that section of the lake that gave way is a man made earthen dam or dike. Since there's no report of them opening the lakes flood gates to mitigate the heavy rain flow and prevent overloading the lakes design, I can only assume that the lake is an almost entirely earthen construct. Further commentary by others that the lake has "Drained" itself once before only would reinforce my statement that the lake needs to be re-engineered with something other than an earthen structure at its weaker shores.

When I clicked on the link, the video showed damage to an apartment complex in Richton Park, IL. My husband and I lived in that apartment complex in 1977-79.

YIKES! It gave us chills. It truly is devastating.

What's happening with that link is they UPDATE the news, it changes.
The Dells clip was replaced with Richton flooding.

Now there is another dam that is expected to break in Mucownogo(sp?).

All these news videos of Wisconsin flooding look as bad if not worse as the Katrina flooding. Yet it certainly is not getting the same news coverage. Maybe because everyone is helping each other, families and townspeople banding together to help the home owners in distress, instead of crying to the government for free fema trailers.

AMEN! Hate to see folks loose out, BUT, those directly affected will probably rebuild in the same places, or very nearby.....saw a news clip of one WI mayor who stated that the record flooding encompassed the exact areal coverage of the USGS 100-year flood plain map....yet they still allow others to build there.....too bad many don't learn from their mistakes......at least WI folks don't build BELOW sea level....

Lake Delton is indeed a manmade lake created through construction of a dam. The disaster that emptied the lake was NOT a failure in the dam, but failure of natural soil that had formed a ridge between the Wisconsin river valley and the stream that was dammed to form Lake Delton. It appears not to have previously occurred to WI DNR regulators to evaluate the native soil conditions for failure as rigorously as they check manmade dams. Again, the DAM didn't fail, a former ridge of native soils did.

If they are going to fix it right, they'll need to assess what is under the REST of that ridge and take measures to avoid seepage creating the kind of quicksand conditon that likely caused this failure.

Tommy bartletts will not fold, and the town of Lake Delton will not close. the lake will be refilled just as soon as the earthen dam is repaired. from the latest I heard they are hoping it will be filled by the end of summer.

Were going to the Jellystone next weekend. so I am going to get some pics.
