OK, looks like we will be spending 2 days in N.C. with some old friends. Since we will be there longer than just over night, I'd like to stay someplace that has activities for the kids, like a lake.
We will be coming up I-95 from Florida. I don't think we want to head out to the coast, but would rather do the lake scene thing.
Need suggestions of a state park, etc on a lake that is reasonably close to I-95 (1-2 hrs).
Someone earlier suggested Jordan Lake.....any info on it would be great. Seems you can't make reservations unless staying 7 days or more. Are there 1st come-1st served sites availabe that can't be reserved? Does it fill up during the week? Which campground would you suggest?

There is a nice resort near Selma,NC right on I-95 called RVaction. It is located middle of state on 95 at exit98 and near Raleigh. The web site is RVaction.us. I havent stayed there but web site is great.
Jordan Lake has four SRA campgrounds. We usually stay at Crosswinds and yes when we have been there sites were available even during the forth week. The big thing is the closeness to the swimming area and the lake it's self. If you do not want to be right on the water you should have no problem getting a site.
Agree with Carolina Cruiser. You should have no problem getting a site at the campgrounds on Lake Jordan. Look at the NC state park system website for additional information.Good roads all the way there from I-95. I would guess it's about 50 miles WNW of I-95 and I-40 . Just pick up I-40 towards Raleigh. Continue on I40 south of Raleigh, pick up US1/64 South and finally take 64 west. That will take you right to the Lake. I doubt you'll get a waterfront site unless you're lucky but there are plenty of good sites. Very wooded and the sites are good size. Just water and electric but they have dump stations.
I'm new to NC so I'm not sure what there is to do or see except enjoy the beauty of the state. We too have camped at Lake Jordan and liked it. There are sooo many campsites among the different campgrounds that you should not have a problem getting a site.
If you have time before you need to set up, you may want to drive through each of them and see which one you like. They'll let you drive through, we were pulling out HTT so they took a deposit and gave it back if we came back out in a specified time period.
We rented a pontoon boat at Crosswinds Marina www.crosswindsmarina.com/, they were nice people to rent from. You may want to consider this if you have time.
I hear from friends that the ticks are out in full force at Lake Jordan right now so you may need to do the tick check on each other.
There are a lot of other beautiful spots on the other side of the state in the mountains. Come back when you have more time!

Thanks for the replies. Jordan Lake looks beautiful and I'd love to see the Bald Eagle. Got to work out how our friends will do this, they were looking to rent a cabin and there aren't any there.
Jordan Lake has much to offer with regards to scenic beauty. I echo the suggestion to rent a pontoon boat. The lake has no development along the shoreline except for the CG's and 1 marina.
If you plan on camping during the week, there will be plenty of first come first serve sites available. I prefer Crosswinds CG because it is smaller than Popular Point and 2 years ago they replaced the all the 30 amp sockets in the electrical panels at each site. They also offer duplex sites that are nice if you are camping with friends or family. Parker's Creek CG is nice however there aren't waterfront w/e sites due to the low elevation and the risk of flooding. Keep in mind that the park gate closes at 9:00 pm. The camp host can unlock it for you if need be. It is a long walk from the gate to any of the campsites.
I hope you enjoy your stay in NC ... come back and see us, ya here!

On edit - If you do luck up and get a waterfront site, please be careful of broken fishing lines with the hooks still attached around the water's edge and into the lake itself. The waterfront area is a very inviting place for the kids to play, we just survey the area before we turn the kids loose.
