I assume you have a work permit for Canada?
A passport is not needed for land travel at this time.

I don't know what your time schedule is, but recently the State Department was turning passports in as little as 3 weeks. The problem is not going into Canada but getting back to the US. Check closely before you make a final decision. We've always found that traveling with a passport is much easier than without.

I think they have backed off a bit and all you need for now is a photo id like a drivers license.Mark.

A government issued photo ID and proof of citizenship is all that is needed. But for the most up to date info check the government website.

So if the returning American doesnt have the required paperwork to re enter the US will he really be denied entry into his own country? what does the hapless traveler do next? especially if he is now denied entry back into Canada......Get the passport

Probably a trip to the nearest Consulate to "Properly" establish identity?? Giving the border agents a hard time over things like this is definitely counterproductive. You can't believe how much of a bad time they can give you. I was on an aircrew once where that happened and they went all the way down to rolling toothpaste tubes.

Definitely not fun and of course they weren't in any rush to get their job done.

Get a passport.

For the sake of a few dollars I would get passport(s) and you should not have any problems. We always show our passports at the border crossing even though it is not a requirement.

Just curoius, it seems a lot of people are very reluctant to get a passport. We have friends who live in Buffalo who seem to be resisting getting passports too.

I just do not understand it.

To me it is, why spend the money for passports when I don't need to have them.
