I am writing from Ocean Waves campground on this Wednesday morning. There are many open lots here, the KOA up the road is less than a quarter full while Camp Hatteras looks to be around half full.
There has been a heat wave the past week with high humidity and heat advisories has largely past and the weather has moderated with better conditions for the next week or so.
But the big news is the smoke from the fire burning some 40-50 miles SW of here. When the winds come from the West, South-West the smoke gets thick with visibility reduced to under a mile. While there are some hardy souls out on the beach, most campers are staying indoors until the smoke clears. Bummer.
Of course the other big news is that a lot of the ORV beach access has been closed and if you are intersted check out this link; http://www.IslandFreePress.org
I see blue sky out the window and am told the wind is backing around from the North..this is good news indeed! Go away smoke!! Time to get the poles, ice down the soda's and head for the beach.

Thanks for the update, I guess I am surprised that it is that deserted, but maybe we should not be due to gas prices? Yesterday I just completed my reservations for Ocean Waves for September. We will be taking the week down there. What is the source of the fire?

Be happy your on the outer banks and not inland. On the weather maps on the news the highs there were in the 80s or low 90s and we were breaking 100.

Sorry but just what/where is OBX?? The use of local abbreviations really bugs me! I like to know what part of the c ountry folks are referring to in their posts.

I agree. But OBX meaning Outer Banks (NC) is hardly a local abbreviation. The word "Hatteras" in the OP might also have been a clue.

It is not just the ORV (Off-Road Vehicle) beach access that is being affected. These closures affect pedestrians also!
Darn thing is that the Endangered Species Act is being used to justify this for several species and only one species (Piping Plover) is considered Endangered.
It is not about the birds.
