Sorry but just what/where is OBX?? The use of local abbreviations really bugs me! I like to know what part of the c ountry folks are referring to in their posts.

The OP's on HI (Hatteras Island, not Hawaii!)

It took me a while to figure out was PINS means...

I have noticed that there doesn't seem to be as many RVs coming down as in years past. Reservations are down 17% so the rentals say. I really enjoy seeing you guys pass through. I am the guy headed off this sandpile and to grass and trees!!!

Of course the other big news is that a lot of the ORV beach access has been closed and if you are intersted check out this link; http://www.IslandFreePress.org

It is not just the ORV (Off-Road Vehicle) beach access that is being affected. These closures affect pedestrians also!

Darn thing is that the Endangered Species Act is being used to justify this for several species and only one species (Piping Plover) is considered Endangered.

It is not about the birds.

Just a thought: NPS wants to limit or do away with driving on the beach but if the Supt of the park makes the rule, he knows he will most likely get fired. So here's the plan, let's get the Bird Society to sue us (NPS) and we (NPS) will pay all their legal expenses and when it is all said and done the Bird Society just goes home.

I could not agree with you more "It is not about the birds."

I don't think he would be fired, but most likely promoted. I appears that the anti-ORV sentiment extends up into the Department of Interior. However, I don't understand them allowing pedestrians to be so severely restricted as has resulted from the decree.

Fortunately, yesterday NC Congressman Walter Jones introduced HR.6233 to return management of the park to NPS and provide relief from the recent decree that was authored by Audubon, Def. of Wildlife, and SELC and signed by our questionable judge Terrence Boyle. Senators Elizabeth Dole and Richard Burr introduced it as S.3113. Our eastern NC legislators are on board, but support from other areas is needed.

It is not about the birds, it is about access for those who are not wealthy enough to rent an oceanfront cottage or campsite. It's also about being able to access areas like Cape Point which are 1.5 miles from a small parking lot (~12 vehicles) and 3 miles from the main parking lot by the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse.

Most people do not understand the access issue until they visit Cape Hatteras and see the geography for themselves.

Visit if you get a chance. It is a magical place.

We camped at the OBX the weekend before Memorial day weekend. It was really strange driving over Oregon Inlet and not seeing any vehicles on the beach .......... all of the restrictions are closing the better fishing areas..........we had planned on returning for 10 days for the 4th of July but when the NPS issued an new rule outlawing beach camp fires between 10 PM and 6 AM we decided enough was enough and cancelled our reservation and are now going to the Eastern Shore of VA. I can even have a campfire at my site and fish in the bay.

We will probably do short weekend trips in the future to the OBX but until they get the ORV issue resolved extended stays aren't in the future. We have been making multiple trips there for the past 30 years but people are so concerned about being PC ..... I'm not going there..........

I just hope they get things resolved so we can start to enjoy the little bit of paradise that is left there.

I don't have "a point". I'm just reporting what I have seen this year. I have been coming here the last 7 years I have never seen the campgounds so vacant. Be it the economy, fuel prices, ORV access or what have you...I'm only stating what I see while here.

That is odd that Camp Hatteras had only one site available? I had inquired during that time and found sites available. Are you a coast to coast member (samsphones)?
