i am a new dp owner. i have a stupid question, but i cant seem to find a clear instruction on fuel/water seperator service. it sez to drain after each fill up. ok, if i turn the plastic valve on the bottom of the seperator, do i empty the container ? will it refill its self without priming? dont want to make a serious mistake.
i have a 2001 tradewinds ltc 39' with a cat 330 3126 truck engine.
have been reading your posts and have come to the conclusion that i have a lot to learn. thank you guys, for all your help. keep up the good work......

All I can say is, get the name off you seperator & google it. That's what I did. Found out my stuff was old & needed upgrade. Also I've never had water in the bowl. Good luck.

I look at the bowl occasionally for water....if I find none then I leave it alone....I have never had water in the bowl.

As mentioned above, there is no need to drain the sight bowl each time you fuel up your unit.
If you get water in the sight bowl, it will look like a blob in a lava lamp, floating around in the bottom of the bowl.
If you have water in the bowl, then you only need to drain out enough to get rid of the water.

I drain when I get fuel at out of the way places or when I think there might be water in it. Otherwise, about twice a month. Then I drain a couple of ounces into a plastic peanut butter jar. Water and dirt will show up in the bottom, as diesel fuel floats. By the way, the few ounces of fuel I get we use to start campfires. No waste, no pollution.

You only need to drain a few 3oz's if you have that much or more water you have a fuel issue. No need to drain all of it .

Draining immediately after refueling is a waste of time. Any water you MIGHT get wont have seperated by that time. If you have a hangup on draining...and there is really no need to have one...drain it every MORNING before starting out ( but thats an excessive amount actually)

DONT EVER drain it completely....ask me how I know this!!! ( Its not "Miller time"..its "wrecker time"!!!) The fuel will drain back to the tank and the pump cant suck it that far to reprime...your dead where you sit!

There are products you can add to your fuel..Howe's Lubricator is one of them...that will disperse the water into teenie tiny droplets and it can pass right on thru. Some people swear at these products..some people swear BY these products. But after I ONCE drained about a shot glass of water out or my fuel/water seperator I started using Howes and never have had any more water VISIBLE in the seperator ever again.

Some separators do not have a see-through bowl so you don't know if you have water until you drain some fuel. Checking after filling your tank tells you what was in your last tank of fuel, not what you just loaded since the new fuel hasn't passed through the separator yet. As Sully said, DON'T drain a lot! An ounce +/- is enough. If you drain too much, you introduce air into the filter and you can't start the engine.
