First let me apologize for the long itinerary. Hope you all can hang in there long enogh to offer advise.
I am planning to leave the Dallas/Ft Worth area on or about October 6. I will be headed for Las Vegas Nevada ( 1st Major layover). From there I plan on continuing North to the Virgina City/ Lake Tahoe area. (Concerned about road conditions this late in the year) I will probably spend a few days in the Lake Tahoe area, and then move on to St Helena, California (Just North of Napa). I will spend a week or so there, then begin the journey South to DisneyLand (Anaheim) and after the body can take no more of that fun, on to San Diego. Probaly a week of so there. Final leg will be the return trip home along the southern route (I-10). I really have no need to be back in Fort Worth before mid November, so time is not an issue, but do not plan on pushing it hard on any driving days.
I would appreciate anyones input as to routes, road and weather conditions, or sights of interest along the way.
This is the first BIG retirement trip. Hope to have many years of these to come.
Thanks, all.
So this is a 4 week trip. Your craming a lot of miles and to do's into 4 weeks. Once you hit Vegas your road condition concerns are mute till you hit the Tahoe area, just carry chains, very seldom do they get heavy snow till the end of October. Sounds like a great time, but I would put 2 more weeks in there for a more relaxed pace. Happy trails.

???
6 weeks is what he started with. Oct 6 to mid November. Oct 6 to Nov 17 is exactly 6 weeks.
Late October here in the Tahoe area can be very nice, we can always get a snow storm as well. Not really any activities going on seeing that it is the shoulder season, but still a nice time to visit. You can always wait out any bad weather down in the Carson Valley, but we normally do not get hit with anything big that early.
That is a great time to visit the St Helena area, Fall colors will be great and not as crowded. The Napa Valley still gets a good deal of weekend traffic, so try to plan accordingly.

i live in the Napa Valley. where do you plan to stay in St. Helena?
i'm not aware of any campgrounds there, except Napa-Bothe St. Park, just north of there. there is a campground at the County Fairgrounds in Calistoga.
other than those two, the only other campgrounds are in the city of Napa.
p.s. if you need any info or recommendations about the Valley, feel free to send me a p.m.
