What`s the deal on a quick overnite in Flying J or similar. If I`m only pulling in to get some shut eye, I don`t see the need to check in to a campsite and pay the fare. I`m guessing from the number of rigs on the lot they don`t charge/don`t care. Do any of you do this and is it a good idea? Can I put my slide out? Thanks.

whatever you do, DON'T park around back with all the trucks and take up a space that a big truck could be using. Park up front or use a wal-mart parking lot.

I buy dinner or breakfast while I'm there.

Walmart - no, not, never.
Flying J's - I've done it a couple of times late at night when weather turned bad on me and I couldn't continue on.
At Flying J Most park up front under the sign, you usually might see 3 or 4 RV's clustered together. I've never seen any need for protection.
No slides out, no BBQ, no lawn chairs, and no flamingo's stuck in pavement.

We have spent many nights in Wal Mart parking lots, Flying J, mall parking lots, rest areas, and have only been asked to move twice. We extend our slide out, usually come in late and leave early.

It's now ready to spend the winter in the garage for more mods. More neon, strobe lights, alarm, a pa system, maintance, and whatever else that comes along. This golf cart does wheelies and travels thru 7 inches of mud when need be. Two honda eu2000i gens twinned to supply the electrical power. Latest addition an 04 Honda Goldwing. We've stopped in Flying J's several times over the years and never any problems. Fill up with fuel. use the dump station, enjoy a relaxing meal, and buy a few needed things in their store.
Just like stopping in any non campground, use common sense when selecting a spot. Get there early, and find a parking spot off to the side away from the trucks, if you must open a slide try to find a spot at the end of the lot in the corner or next to an island where you can bring it out not interfering with another parking spot or sidewalk. I have always found the Flying J's to be very safe and very helpful towards professional drivers and RV'ers alike, they want your business just as much a driver, and if you don't abuse the privilege to park overnight it's a win win for everyone.

We stopped at a Flying Jay that was full and the attendent there said that she always stayed at Walmarts when she traveled, they were so much quieter. We follwed her directions to the nearest Walmart and found she was right.
I always plan my trips around the Flying J's. They have routing software on their web site. They get no points for comfort or quiet but you can fill everything that needs filled, empty everything that needs emptied, grab some ZZZZ's and get back on the road with minimum hassle. Once I'm retired and an extra day or two on the road doesn't much matter, I'll probably choose a day or two at a campground over an overnight at a FJ.
Not all FJ's are created equally however. A small handful don't have the facilities I've come to expect. Usually they are one's FJ bought rather than built. I've always managed to make do when I encounter one of those but its a bummer when you've driven all day expecting something familiar at the end and not finding it.
If you don't need to fill or empty any of your tanks, then IMHO a Walmart is a better choice. As noted above, it's quieter, nobody minds if you open your slides, no trucker will resent the space you're taking up, and there are other supplies available. Just ask first, or call ahead.
