This could happen anywhere, but we stayed overnight at a Flying J in Albuquerque, NM a few years back and the next morning I got out and took a walk around the RV and tow vehicle just to check things out. By shear luck I looked under the motorhome and someone had placed a beer bottle against each of the inside rear dual tires, obviously hoping I'd just pull forward and run over them.

Now I check anywhere I park.

The flying J I stopped at had designated spaces for RVs right up front by the sign. I asked if I could spend the night and the girl at the counter said they love it when Rvers spend the night. Her parents always stop there for the night when they travel so they can see her. My kids spent the night shopping and eating junk food and Krispie Kreme dounuts.

We haven't done a Walmart yet but we will someday.

Ok, thanks all. I`ll agree with the noise part. When I went there to weigh my rig, I could barely hear the girl on the phone.

As far as the slide, I have to put it out at least a little or I can`t get through the trailer to the rear or get the bathroom door open. It`s nice to have it as an alternative.

I don't see a problem! Park in a well lit area and get some shut eye!

Not all FJ's are created equally however. A small handful don't have the facilities I've come to expect. Usually they are one's FJ bought rather than built. I've always managed to make do when I encounter one of those but its a bummer when you've driven all day expecting something familiar at the end and not finding it.

IIRC, the one on the south side of Birmingham is dreadful to get in and out of, especially when busy.

We stayed in a Flying J once and will never do it again unless it's an emergency. The Rv section was so tight that we had to be careful opening the door. All night long, announcements were being made every 10 to 15 minutes on a very loud public address system. We got very little sleep.

Flying J does not charge however courtisy dictates you give them some business (Same for other truck stops and stores where you can park)

So, consider the cost of dinner and breakfast at the J-Diner v/s the cost of the same meals in the rig at a full hook up campground with the overnight fee

Turns out I was spending 2x as much at the J

I will try to ignore all the personal spins written on this thread and give you some real advice that I think you are asking for:
Spending the night at the flying J is fine. Problems with the flying J is that often times they are so busy if you arrive late they are totally full of other RVer's spending the night. They also tend to be very noisy in general if you can hear noise inside your camper. Putting a slide out is generally fine if you have to to sleep or fix a snack. I know my fiver we have to put the frig out at least half way to get a bottle of water.
We prefer Walmart due to the size of the parking lot and the noise is so much less. The parking lots sometimes have cameras and there are usually people around. I have on many occations seen officers (local and highway patrol) in the parking lots patroling. In all the years we have been sleeping in the parking lots of Walmarts (arriving late and leaving early) we have never been asked to leave, or move. We have however watched the local police run off a bunch of kids racing their hotrod cars one night)

Yes, in a well lit area, but not directly under the light in the summer, unless you want your fans and vents filled with bugs.

I've never tried staying at a Flying J but did spend the night once at a Pilot travel center in Wilcox, AZ a few years ago (the name of the station has now changed, I believe). As I remember, it wasn't too noisy since there was a separate RV area. My preference is usually Wal*Mart but be aware that in some towns the local kids like to hang around the parking lot late into the night and make noise, although they'll generally leave you alone. I asked one manager about the number of kids racing their cars around the lot the previous night and he explained the police leave them alone because if they didn't have the Wal*Mart lot to mess around in they may be committing crimes somewhere else in the neighborhood. Made sense....
