I am looking for some nice campgrounds with camp sites right on lakes or rivers or nice streams. Preferably wooded campground also. We live in Memphis and are looking for place like this within about two hours or so of Memphis TN

In Ark Greers Ferry lake is really nice MO Table Rock Lake is also great both have Corps Parks with sites close to the water but as of right now the Lakes are very high and I would call about campsite conditions some of the sites may be closer to the water than you want right now

Old Hwy 25 Campground at Greers Ferry is nice. Kennedy State Park below the dam at Greers Ferry is great for trout fishing and being on the river. Piney Grove Campground on Bay Springs Lake near Booneville, Ms. if you can get a reservation. Natchez Trace State Park on Pin Oak Lake near Lexington, Tn. is nice but not very wooded.

Along the Meramec or Current Rivers in SE MO. Many campgrounds on the river banks.

In Southeast Missouri, I have a few favorites that I will share.
River Road Campground at Clearwater lake. This is near Piedmont MO. The campground is very near lake dam and the outfall Black River is right against the campground. Lots of shade. Be advised that the water levels are very high right now due to spring floods.
Old Greenville Recreational Area. This neat park is located at the original location of the town of Greenville MO. The town was relocated a few miles north in the 1930s due to repeated flooding. In the campground there are still old sidewalks that criss cross through the woods from when the town was still there! Also there is a cemetary and a large mound where the county courthouse once stood. This park is located at the headwaters of Wappappelo lake. Lots of shade. Again, due to recent floods, access to the sidewalks is restricted due to debris and some damage from the floods. Hopefully the walkways are repaired soon.
Sam A. Baker State Park. This park is located upstream from the Greenville campground on the St. Francois River. There is also a nearby creek called Big Creek that offers excellent swimming. Lots of shade.
I frequent these parks each year as they are all three only about 1 hour from where I live. Unfortunately, they may be a little farther than the 2 hour drive from Memphis you mentioned, but if you are ever in the area, give one of these parks a try! They are all within 20 miles of each other.

Thumbs up for RiverRoad at Clearwater one of my favorite spots DW prefes Piedmont Park above the dam Was at Sam A Baker two weeks ago stayed at campsite 1 campwas nice but ticks were terrible I guess forom recent flooding They also have an equestrine campground for you to bring your horse and excelent trails Jacks Fork and Alley Springs are also favorites of ours

I am also looking for basically the same type camping destination you described. In fact DW & I drove about 80 mi. oneway, this very afternoon, to investigae two campsites that you may be intrested in. Both are near Demopolis Alabama. Fosque Camp Ground and Forkland CG are both Corp of Engineer CG's, Mobile District, located on the Tombigbee and Black Warrrior Rivers. I suspect they are within your 2 hrs. range from Memphis.
Both wooded (Forkland more remote) and very nice. We have not camped at either yet but we intend to do so soon. Have 2 grandsons and pontoon boat that will be a good combination on such an awesome waterway system.
You should check on other Corp CG's especialy those in the Tennesee River Valley since I know many others would be even closer to your home.

Blanchard Springs Caverns near Mountain View, Arkansas. Beautiful stream running through campgrounds. Has 2 cave tours that are great.
Ozark Folk Center.

Isn't it Mountain Home Ark that has the Theater that has the Hillbilly Show and after the show tons of people sit around in front of the courthouse and break off into groups and play Bluegrass music I've only been there once But I thought it was pretty cool if you had a instrument you just sat down and started playin the show was great and all the music after was even better
