It would appear that Cat has decided that there is better return on investment in other areas than on-highway truck engines. This appears to mean that one will not be able to order / buy a MH with a Cat engine in it much after 2010.
Here is part of the announcement:
In a related move, Caterpillar said it had determined independently that it will not supply EPA 2010 compliant engines to truck and other on-highway original equipment manufacturers. Instead, Caterpillar will work through its alliance with Navistar to target a 2010 introduction of a North American Cat-branded heavy-duty truck for severe service applications, such as road construction, large infrastructure projects and oil and petroleum development.
The entire article can be read here.
With Detroit backing away and now Cat rethinking their position it would appear that engine choice will become somewhat limited. Might this be a result of emission rules that are just too stringent / costly to meet ?? Either way, with less competition prices will go up. Just another ingredient in the turmoil the RV industry faces.

You don't suppose the draconian environmental restrictions on engine manufacturers and the related costs of those restrictions had something to do with the Cat decision ---Hmmmmm

This is what GM, Ford and Chrysler should have done in CA YEARS ago. "Your expectations are to high for todays tech." Instead we had the horible cars of the mid to late 70s. Tech and market compition will make engines more efficent quicker than the government and at a better price.

I didn't read that to say that you would no longer be able to get a Caterpillar engine in your motorhome. It is just that after 2010 the "caterpillar" engine will be produced jointly between Navistar and Caterpillar. Am I reading this incorrectly???

I read it to say that you are likely to get a Navistar branded engine in your 2010 RV rather than a CAT. CAT will supply the severe use engines used in earth movers and dump trucks etc.
We are assuming that RVs will be using diesel engines by then - if fuel costs carry on increasing then maybe we will all be driving hybrid RVs.

It sounds like they are aiming for essentially off-road vehicles.
I suspect there is more to it than fear of air quality standards. After all, a number of automobile makers currently offer or plan to offer diesel-powered models in the US within the next few years.

Here is a quote from a CAT press release "...Caterpillar has determined independently that it will not supply EPA 2010 compliant engines to truck and other on-highway original equipment manufacturers (OEMs)."
The press release also states "Under the alliance, Caterpillar and Navistar plan to cooperate on engine development, incorporating "best in class" technologies from both companies. Caterpillar and Navistar intend to work together on development of mid-range engines for diesel applications, such as school buses and utility trucks. This engine development would support each company's stated path not to utilize urea-based Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) technology.
"There are many opportunities for technology sharing and development that would result in the ability to better meet the worldwide demand for diesel engines in both on and off-highway applications," said Jack Allen, President, Navistar Engine Group.
CAT's press release is a little confusing. Does it mean that CAT will stop manufacturing their own On-Highway engines by 2010, in favor of a jointly developed Navistar/CAT branded diesel?
What's interesting is that CAT's On-Highway engines appear to only account for slightly over 10% of their total engine business. The complete CAT press release is available here.

True but a source a headaches
There are several factors, emissions, a very cyclical market, and recent alliances and acquisition that limit markets.
