has anyone sucessfully installed a back up camera on their TT? if so what's your opinion. I was thinking it might be handy to have one to get a good view behind the trailer, both when backing for obvious reasons, and also on the highway when a nut job is about to pull a 100 mph fly by, or I need to move over a lane or two and am moving much slower than surrounding heavy traffic.

I haven't but I really would like to. I'm sort of a mod freak. I found this great site that has just about every type of backup camera solution you can think of:

http://www.rearviewcamera.net/cartercam/cartercamhome.asp

I'll probably tackle this in the next few weeks and do a write up on it.

I have one. It was pretty easy. I have a full DIY system, but you might be able to rig something out of another one.

I bought a 7" LCD TV for the TV, and 2 wide angle (120 degree) waterproof cameras (search ebay for backup cam). I have one in my license plate, and one mounted in a PVC "gun" off the back of my TT. I hook up to the TT then switch over the connection to the TT camera. I ran the 12v off the battery with an inline switch, and then ran coax (with RCA ends) back to the camera.

It works great for us, I don't even use extended mirrors. Really helps with backing into campsites too.

PM me for more info.

This doesn't show the TT install, but gives the rest of the info for wiring into my burb. www.y4hdesigns.com/backup_wiring.htm. I put some 55w backup lights as well.

Bought mine off Ebay abt 2 yrs ago.
Price was around $250 for 5" color monitor, camera and 65' of wiring
Went with wired at time because wireless we much more expensive and not very reliable....both have since changed.
Camera is mounted just above spare tire on rear
Cable runs under 5ver to connector by pin box. Cable from cab plugs in there
Run mine whenever hooked to 5ver...so it's a 'rear view mirror'

We also purchased our back up camera off ebay. We love it. We have our TT and a car hauler with a camera on each and a quick disconnect for the trailer. We just plug in depending on which trailer we hook up. It has sound so it is easy to give back up directions. The monitor is nice and we leave it on when traveling so we can see what is behind us. The install was pretty straight forward and DH is pretty handy with cars. The ebay seller is a super nice guy and helped us figure out what we needed. The equipment is quality and we are pleased.

I also bought my camera off of ebay, as a matter of fact I have bought 3 from him. The one on the back of the trailer is great I use it all the time when hooked up to the trailer. You can see what is behind you and with mirror extensions you get a good idea what is around you. I bought a 7" lcd dvd player with input, the camera from ebay and the wires I did myself.

The next camera I bought I made a bracket for the hitch and use it only when backing up to the trailer. I now have it figured out where I need to stop, it makes hooking up really easy to do by yourself. My wife doesn't even help me back up anymore when we are out.

i installed wireless cam on my motorhome. purchased from pep-boys, $80. Has a max sending range of 30-35ft. Works well on my 25' class-c. use it anytime while on busy roads or backing up. i installed switch on dash to power on cam and used velcro to mount display to dash.

for those who mounted the camera on the trailer, how exactly did you mount it, and where did you route the wires? I'd think it'd be best to mount it on top of the TT, but I hate the idea of putting holes in the roof at all. And then how to run the cable? I'm thinking it'd be best to mount it in the spare tire carrier (my fav so far) or on the bumper. Running the cable thru the undercarrage from the bumper would be extremely easy, and no wires running down the side of the camper.

I believe I'd prefer a easy temp installation on the TV, with a screen that would either hang on the rearview mirror, or suction to the windsheild, and draw power from the ciggarrette lighter. Then I could easily remove items from the TV when not towing.

KnLMurakami - that link to the ebay seller seems to offer a quality product at a rock bottom price, and seems to really want business...it's refreshing, thanks for a great source

I went UNDER the TT all the way to the back. I used a surface mount screw in pipe mount (it has for holes for screws, and you screw in a 1" pipe into it). I went up over my spare tire, so I basically have a 90 degree "gun". The wires run inside the pvc and are siliconed in so it's water proof. I added a switch to my battery box, so when we hook up, I just turn the power on for the camera, and I'm good to go.
