Oversize Load to cause I40, I81 delays

Quote:

Oversized load could create delays on Interstates 40 & 81 in Tennessee

The Daily News Journal

A truck carrying an extremely oversized load will be traveling across the state of Tennessee on its way to Maryland beginning Thursday, June 12, 2008.

Due to the dimensions of the cargo, traffic traveling eastbound on Interstate 40 from the West Tennessee area to Knoxville and northbound on Interstate 81 from Knoxville to Virginia will be impacted.

Through Nashville, the truck will be routed onto I-440 then back to I-40.

The load is 28 feet wide, more than 15 feet tall, approximately 135 feet long, and weighs more than 200,000 lbs.

It will be escorted by multiple Tennessee Highway Patrol units and TDOT HELP vehicles. While traveling on two-lane sections of interstate, it will completely block the travel lanes in its immediate vicinity.

The truck will periodically pull over at pre-designated areas to allow traffic to pass.

The travel schedule is as follows:

Thursday, June 12, 2008, 9:00 PM through Friday, June 13, 2008, 5:00 AM: Missouri/Tennessee line to I-40 at SR 840 in Dickson County

Friday, June 13, 2008, 9:00 PM through Saturday, June 14, 2008, 5:00 AM:
I-40 & SR 840 in Dickson County to Knoxville

Saturday, June 14, 2008, 9:00 PM through Sunday, June 15, 2008, 5:00 AM:
I-40 in Knoxville, then to I-81 to Bristol, TN

Significant delays on I-40 East and I-81 North are expected during these times. Motorists are urged to adjust their travel schedules accordingly.

Thanks. I'd love to know what the heck that load is....maybe I'll get bored enough to drive up I-26 to Bristol and watch it go by....

I did see a real whopper of a tractor-trailer (12 or so axles) carrying a fairly small but over-width box that I assume was very heavy. It was in the middle of the night at a SC rest area on I-95. It came complete with state troopers & other offical escorts. I'm guessing that it was something nuclear.

My first guess is wind generator turbine blades. That's about the size of the length of one blade. The was a recent article in one of the eclectic coop magazines about the massive amount of wind generators going up in far west Texas along I-10 and I-20. It could also be part of the erector set type wind generator towers that get up as high as 285 feet.

It's a four month lead time as when to start looking for the gangrene that appears at the top, when it really get rank.

I saw several of those wind turbine blades traveling I-20 a few weeks back in Texas. They are long but not wide. They put two on each load.

Leaving Knoxville Saturday AM... Glad I'm going South down 75. But Maybe we'll get a peak

The truck, carrying antennas for the U.S. Navy, will block two lanes on interstates.
