Okay, I'm about to do a little panic dance here. I just bought a new Yamaha EF2400is generator from Wise Equipment and tried hooking it up to the '07 Jayco 27BH w/Coleman Mach 3 Plus 13.5 AC unit. When I kick on the AC, nothing else on except the converter w/fully charged batteries, the little Yamaha goes to full throttle the AC unit sorta hums but won't start and finally the overload trips on the generator.

Sooo, now what? Do I have a $1100 generator I can't use??? OMG

The specs for the Mach 3 state 10.9 A for the compressor, and 3.4 A for the blower on High (I was on low, or 2.4 A) for a total wattage of 14.3A x 115V = 1644.5 W

Ideas??? HELLLLLPPP!!

Have you checked the output of the generator or the draw from the AC with a meter? According to the Yamaha web site, your generator produces:
Maximum AC Output 2400 watts
Rated AC Output 2000 watts
Rated / Maximum AC Current 16.7 / 20 amps @ 120V

Either your AC is drawing more than you expect, your generator is putting out less than you think, or you have something else drawing current.

Make sure that your hot water tank element is turned off.

And that your fridge is on "gas only".

I have found that with my Coleman 13.5 in order to lower the draw I first start just the fan which draws nearly 5 amps and then settles down to around 3 amps. After the fan is running I then start the compressor by turning on the AC. This seems to cut down on the initial shock to the power supply (line current or generator). I used my Kill A Watt meter which is only rated to 15 amps and found that when I started everything at once the meter went into alarm mode and beeped. By starting each item separate it did not overload and alarm so maybe try that.

Certainly check your ac current draw without the AC to see if there are any other significant loads. You should look into the ac/dc clamp on meters that Sears sells to check the current. You may however be too marginal. A soft start kit may help. Worse case, change your AC unit to a Mach 3 PS that draws 4A less current compared to the standard Mach 3. I have been able to start mine (PS version)with a Honda EU2000. Even so the peak current is on the order of 20A when powered from an ac outlet.

Water heater is off, fridge is off, lights are off. Nothing is on. I have not pulled fuse in converter, but I shouldn't have to - should I?

No, I haven't put a current meter on it not do I know if I can get it done in time for that and get whatever fixed/exchanged/etc. anyway...We're leaving for Yellowstone next Friday, June 20th!!

I've read these do have to "break in" a while, is this correct?

I'll get a clamp on ammeter tomorrow and see what's going on. Do I need to tear an extension cord apart and get across the "hot" wire only for those?

Change the AC unit? Is the Mach 1 and upgrade from the Mach 3??

That's one way to do it... however, you should be able to buy a small adapter made just for that purpose at the same place you buy the clamp-on ammeter.

You have a locked rotor amperage at start up of over 35 amps.get a soft start kit and the yammy should hang in there long enough to roll it and bring down the amp. to running capacity.Doing a sequential start up as suggested above will help.
