In a couple of weeks we will be going to the Black Hills staying for a week then off to Cody, WY for a couple of weeks. What is the best route to take from the Black Hills to Cody and back? We will be going back to MN afterwards for the FMCA convention. I know there will be the Big Horns to go through just trying to figure out the best route.

It's been quite a while since I was on that route but try to see the Devil's Tower. It is quite amazing and well worth the side trip to get there.

Best route if you don't mind towing over the Bighorns is Rte 16 - less steep than 14 or 14A (14A not recommended for RVs). If you want to skip them, stay on I-90 until west of Billings, then head south on US and state routes to Belfry MT and then to Cody.

Ozarkwoods,

You may wish to check another current thread here regarding routes from Yellowstone to the Black Hills.

Hope this helps and have a great trip!

I've taken 16, 14, and 14A over the Bighorns. 14 and 14A are definitely not recommended for RVs. We've taken them eastbound and it's a hard, steep climb that goes on forever. I'd never take those routes westbound because ther's no way to rest the brakes and you'd get in serious troiuble on the downgrades.

US-16 is a great drive though. It goes through Ten Sleep Canyon rather than up and over the top near Burgess Junction. I'd take US-16 in either direction with any RV.

Thanks all
Cruzer03 that is exactly what I was wondering I had taken the trip over with th motorcycle in 1980 and remember how steep one of the roads were and could not remember which one it was. I knew that I did not want to go on that one with the Coach. So it looks like 16 it is. Thanks again.

Phelpo,

Planned on seeing both of those attractions, and doing an leisurely tour of Yellowstone, Grand Tetons, Thermopolis and all the small roads in and around the area in the jeep.

When I lived in Wy and worked for the Hartford Ins Co, we insured Buffalo Bill,
I had to inventory the rifles, what you see up stairs, is nothing compared with down stairs. Probably 8 to 1 downstairs in the vaults. Enjoy the Wy laid back life style and openness. Don't drink the water in Gillette.
