Truck has about 40K on the clock and has run well - no problems with motor, driveline so far... Remember that these model years had a moderate trend for spitting spark plugs due to the fact that there are only about 4 threads of engagement on the spark plugs... No problems with mine yet concerning that issue...
There were also several TSB's in that model year, the most serious dealing with a major trans overheating issue... Ford in their infinite wisdom decided to run the transmission cooling lines ONLY thru the aux cooler and not the radiator... The TSB dealt with installing a new radiator and rerouting the lines thru the radiator first, then cooler, then trans fluid filter... That TSB WAS done to my truck under warranty...
I tow a #9400 TT and the truck does well, especially with the Banks kit and average about 8-9 KPG on the flats of Illinois - about 6-6.5 in the Black Hills and Smokies, haven't tried the Rockies yet...
A SRW 350 with V10 would be a nice rig - plenty of payload... If the motor is in good shape, it should have a lot more miles to come on it... You might check and see if the truck in question has spit any spark plugs during it's lifetime or if any recalls or TSB's were done to it... You can run the VIN over at Alldata and see if it's effected...

Great info guys, as I was not sure of the model years that were affected by some of these issues. Les, I just looked at the transmission cooling lines and they are not routed thru the radiator, but straight to the trans, cooler. Was this a re-call item that has not been done?? What is Alldata? Is it a web site to get the info from?
Thanks everyone, and keep info coming.

No recall, only people who complained of overheating were offered the cooler in the rad at a cost of $500 IIRC. It wasn't just the V10 it was the same for the PSD as well. My 2000 only had the small oil to air cooler, smaller than the V10, which is basically a Tru Cool Max. I never had any problems with over heating and as I said my air cooler was smaller than the V10 cooler. As a matter of fact many of us installed the V10 cooler for added cooling. This was until the 6.0 came out. Ford used the biggest oil cooler I have ever seen. This thing is over 3 times as big as my stock cooler. Just for insurance I installed the 6.0 cooler because I had a supply of NIB coolers for $60. The 6.0 cooler dropped my trans temps a solid 40 degrees.
Any auto trans that is used for towing should have a trans gauge, in the case of a Ford they should have a after market trans gauge as the factory one is useless. If you see trans temps sustained over 200 degrees than install a larger cooler, not the radiator as it is expensive, just use the 6.0 cooler, but I doubt you will have any problems. The only other problem was the spark plug issue. Otheriwise the V10 is a great engine, not great on mileage as towing will be in the single digits, but it is still a good power plant.

I sure agree on the size of the trans. cooler, as I have never seen one this large either. I will be adding a gauge soon, just for safety sake. Thanks for all the replies.

I had driven the truck for the past week, pulled the TT to the scales and weighed combined then un-hooked and weighed TV by itself. The truck only had a 1/4 tank of gas and weighed 40 #s more than TT. The TV weighed 6140 and TT weighed 6100. The TT if completely loaded to camp would weigh a couple more hundred pounds. The tongue weight or hitch weight on TV was 980 pounds, TT axle weight was 5120 on 2 3500# dexters. It pulled soooooo easy. I just wanted to keep going. The V10 is without a doubt the smoothest gas engine I have ever driven. I know my over all gas usage will go up a little, but will well be worth it, just for the safety of having a TV that handles the TT so much easier. Some may think this is a lot of overkill, but I had always rather have too much truck than just a little too less truck.
And I just happened on this truck while really looking at 3/4 ton trucks.

It's too bad more people on here don't think like you....you can never have too much TV,it pulls so nice,it feels stable all the time and it's just a pleasure to drive, instead of spending 2500.00 for a hitch to "fix" not having enough TV to do the job right,I'm sure someone with a short wheelbase small TV pulling a 28' 6500 lb. TT will get all in a huff, but then they never pulled with a truly capable TV....ENJOY that V-10!Happy Pull'n....!

Like NCHornet said - it was a TSB not a recall... You had to go into your Ford dealer and say your trans was overheating while towing - you could feel the heat through the floorboards or some other line like that... I was fortunate in that my truck was under warranty and the entire TSB was no charge... I also switched to synthetic trans fluid at that time...
In any case, congrats on the V10 - - it's one fine motor and pulls like a bulldog... I'm sure you'll enjoy it...

Hi, shadows4. I have already pulled TT to Truck Cat Scale about 70 miles round trip, while trying TV out for a week. I picked truck up on 6/12 and kept til 6/20 when we (dealer and I) made deal. This was by no means a pull in the mountains, but I could just feel the power and stability there and know that I would have plenty of reserve. I will keep notes on our entire trip, mileage ect. and let you all know how it went when we return.
BY THE WAY: The hitch weight was the real killer on my F-150,and not really enough power from the 5.0 litre 302, but considering this, the F-150 is a great truck for what it's meant to do.
Thanks, Steve
