We are visiting Edisto Beach SP for the first time. We have a three day weekend booked. The drive down was beautiful. The mossy tree lined roads were a site to behold.

When we got to the park (about 6:45 pm) we were a little confused by the poor signs. This is the first state park we have visited that does not have a gated entrance. It felt a little creepy. We finally found our site. The site was nice enough, deep and wide. We eagerly got the necessities ready and hopped on our golf cart. We rode to the end of each road and couldn't find the beach! What a shock to realize that the beach was quite a distance away from our campsite! Perhaps we were too naive, but we actually thought we were in the same campground as the beach area! We hopped in our truck to find the campground. Of course we did found it, but we just can't get over the fact that we were a mile down the road. It doesn't seem too bad except that we can't drive our golf cart to the beach. This is a nice area, but it sure would be nice to feel more secure.

We definitely have learned our lesson about Edisto Beach SP.

I've heard there are 2 sections to the Edisto Beach SP CG, one on/near the beach, and the other more inland. Evidently you were inland.

By "gated," did you mean there's no entry booth, or no actual gate? Some of our SPs have no gate either, at least one that's used with regularity. All have an entry booth at some point, however - perhaps Edisto's is farther inside the park than your CG was.

Come on up and visit our State Parks in NC. Some folks (not me) complain because the gates are locked each evening and not opened again until seven the next AM. No one allowed in or out except in the event of an emergency. I kind of like the fact that you don't have folks driving through the campground late at night.

Most people opt for the beachfront campground at Edisto, not the "Live Oaks" area where you are, about a mile up the road. Some refer to Live Oaks as the "overflow area".

The Live Oaks section is the newer section and has 50 amp service whereas the beach I believe only has 30 amp service. You are also advised to have a full tank of fresh water as the water in the campground and on the island in general is very salty tasting. You can get fresh water at the fire station. This is common knowledge for locals and those that have visited the CG in the past. A year ago when we were there there was a small building for checkin opposite the New Restroom and shower building. Happy camping.

Yes, by gated, I mean some type of security. Many state parks in SC have a locked gate after dark. You get in and out with a security code. Anyone could go and out as they please here. The entry booth is only manned from 9 - 5.

The water is pretty salty. We cooked last night without knowing that. This morning when we checked in, the ranger told us.

There is a really nice shower building here.

The site is huge we just hate we didn't know we were so far from the beach. The weekend will still be great. It just would have been easier on the beach. Oh well, you live and learn.

You're lucky to have gotten that spot. We headed down there last Friday just for a day trip and both campgrounds were full. The only way to get a beach campground spot is to reserve it well in advance, usually right at the 11 month mark. We're going to be down there the last week of July and I made the reservations the first day we were allowed to and by the end of that day almost all the beachfront spots were reserved already. We stayed at live oak last year and it was really nice and the shower house was wonderful compared to others. As far as the security goes, don't worry too much about it. I've been going there for 15 years and crime is basically non existent. We left our car door open last summer with a wallet and laptop when we went to the showers, came back and were siting around the campfire and someone came up and told us. Everything was still there and that wouldn't have happened where I live

I personally hate those 4 number rolling locks when trying to use them late at night.
