Being new to TT camping, I purchased a subscription to trailer life magazine. Got my first issue yesterday.
Well recently my new TT was stolen and I think I will end up having to buy a new one b/s if found it will be beyond repair and if not found it will be settled. I will have to purchase a new one b/s mom and kids have said they wanted another one.
In the classified said register in MT I will not have to pay sales tax. Last TT it was around $1500.
Anyone else done this?? Worth the hassle?? How much will I really save b/s you have to set up an LLC in montana.

When I got my first trailer the previous owner they never paid the fee for plates for a year, which I found out after I paid for the trailer, and got it home, they refused to pay the penalties from DMV, so I ended up paying them, along with the used tax, and new registration fee, it ended up where taxes, registration, and penalties was almost half of what I paid for the trailer. "Komfort".
after using it for 3 or 4 years, I did recoup all monies when I sold it, but it was also in far better condition when I sold it too.
You better check with your state DMV Calif will get there money for taxes from the buyier sooner or later.
I guess buyier beware. and do all your home work.

If Florida is like Colorado they will be looking for units with out of state plates. They then check to see where you reside. If your residence is Colorado they give you a ticket for registuring in another state and make you pay the Colorado tax.

I dont get that...how is new owner responsible for previous owners penalties???? Thats like saying you are responsible for the unpaid parking tickets after you buy a used car...

It is just like buying a house that has liens on it. Unfortunately they do not offer title insurance on TT's. Persons in Colorado are paying very stiff fines. In the tens of thousands of dollars in some cases.

I know it is that way in Utah. I purchased a boat from an individual and had to pay back taxes for two years. I suspect the same will be true for a car in states that have a property tax on cars. As for registering in another state you will most likely get caught and as been stated some states it caries a stiff penalty.

Well, here in the LIVE FREE OR DIE state, we have no sales tax but do have a town tax that is paid at reg time each year. It is on a sliding scale my new trailer cost me $260 (I think) for this year. But I have never of anyone paying any back taxes here. I have even not registered rigs for a couple of years and never had an issue here, just had to pay for the current year...

If you sell a motor vehicle to someone, be sure to ensure that the registration gets changed, esp in states where the plates stay with the vehicle. If the new owner manages to hurt someone before changing registration, YOU are the official owner of the car and may be liable for the injuries. Bad situation if you had already canceled the insurance....
Washington has a Report of Sale form to use (must file within five days of sale).
"Why file a report of sale?
The report of sale does NOT transfer ownership, but will release you from legal liability if you file the report properly. If you do not file a report of sale, you may be held liable for parking tickets, impound fees, and other financial liabilities incurred by the new owner until they transfer the title into their name."

I'd advise using one in any state that doesn't have provision for this. I sent the WA form to Florida when I sold a vehicle with FL tags here in WA, even though I kept the tags per FL law. YMMV!

Why not just pay taxes and help with the states revenue for roads, schools, etc
